In Search of The Best Guinness In Cambridge Part 3: Who Taught You How To Hate?

Welcome to part 3 of the quest to find Cambridge’s best Guinness. Over the last month or so I’ve enjoyed quite a few pints of Ireland’s finest. I’ve also enjoyed making my way around pubs I don’t often visit. Here’s what I got up to between the FA Cup first and second rounds. Let’s get to it.

Saturday 4th November saw the return of the FA Cup, post match my friends and I headed to The Corner House.

The Corner House:

Situated on Newmarket Road, The Corner House is another pub I often just walk past. I’m glad we decided to call in, it’s a cracking pub. The welcome was friendly and the all important Guinness was a strong effort. It was a solid 3.5 out of 5. Bonus points for the awesome retro glass!

The Mill:

I’ve been a fan of The Mill for years; here’s a photo of me presenting the previous team from The Mill an award:

I adore sitting outside The Mill (even in winter) having a pint or two. Below is one of my favourites places in Cambridge to have a pint.

I love hearing the soothing sound of the river. The Guinness quality was a real surprise! It was a very impressive 4 out of 5.

Chesterton Working Man’s Club:

Another skittles away day! I thought twice about even entering this place, it’s not my vibe. However, the people were friendly and surprisingly the Guinness was a respectable 2.75 out of 5. It had a strange, sweet aftertaste that I haven’t come across before.

The Alexandra Arms:
A strong contender for the best pub food on Mill Road, The Alex is a pub that I usually pop into after football.
A solid 3.5 for The Alex. I would certainly have a Guinness there again, however they usually have a more interesting beer on!

The Red Lion (Cherry Hinton):
The closest pub to my house and one that I tend to avoid. The Red Lion is very much a locals pub, but they’re my problem with it. Obnoxiously loud people who don’t create an enjoyable drinking experience. It’s been like that for years. On this visit, one customer was shouting (no attempt at singing) along to the music. I sat as far away as possible but still wished I was anywhere else. I thought, what did I do? Why do I deserve this? Those are lyrics from the Disturbed song used in the title of this blog.
Guinness was a poor 1 out of 5.

The Alma:
The Alma is a pub I must visit more. Great atmosphere, good beer selection and tasty looking food! The Guinness was a very strong 4.25 out of 5.

The Panton Arms:
A literal stones throw from The Alma, The Panton is another nice pub. I always used to prefer The Panton over The Alma, but I’ve changed my mind. The Guinness was an average 2.5 out of 5.

The Tivoli:
I’m honestly fed up of City Pub Co pubs. They’re bland, repetitive and expensive. I’m not sad that Youngs have taken them over, I hope they improve. Average Guinness, 2.5 out of 5, at above average prices. At least I won the crazy golf, which is the only good thing about this pub.

The Green Dragon:

A riverside pub, which I hadn’t visited in a while. It’s a lovely pub and the staff were exceptionally friendly. An above average 3 out of 5, to celebrate a 4-0 Cambridge FA second round win!

That’s all for part 3! Let’s see where part 4 takes me!

Supermarket Weep - Lidl

It’s been a while, but Supermarket Weep is back! The series where myself and some ‘lucky’ guests, try supermarket own brand beer and beers brewed specifically for supermarkets. In previous episodes we all went wild in the aisles of Tesco and Aldi. Welcome to Supermarket Weep - Lidl.  A piece of advice for you, don’t trust the terrible cupboard holders that these beers come in. I opted to go without a bag or a trolley and regretted that decision.  The beers all fell out of the cupboard and onto the floor. I stuffed my pockets with some of the beers, which caused my shorts to fall down. A new low for me is accidentally exposing myself in a Lidl… Trolley to the rescue! Ignore than BrewDog, that was for something else!  For this episode I was joined by friends of the blog, Dan and John. We kicked things off with Excelsior Lager, a French inspired beer. This was bad, like really bad. It’s a really watery beer, with a weird sweet taste. Awful.  Next up was San Marti...

2024 In Review & The Beer Moose Awards!

“Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time” sang Pink Floyd in 1973. They’re sort of right, each year feels shorter than the last. In fact, it does not feel like a year since I was last writing a blog like this one. Contary to what Pink Floyd said, I found time to do quite a lot in 2024! I rode a new personal best 211 rollercoasters! 2024 will remembered as a bit of a rollercoaster (sorry). Great heights and moments balanced by a devastating loss and a rather poor Cambridge United team. This blog is aiming to be a review of my year, with some awards thrown in! Let’s get into it!  January:  January started with an FA Cup tie, away to Blackburn. I decided that Blackburn was sort of near Liverpool, so like all good away days we made it into a pub weekend.  It was an absolute goal fest! Sadly, like most goal fests The U’s are involved with, it ended with United on the losing side. 5-2 Blackburn.  Golden bird I liked Liverpool, it’s a smart and nic...

Phantasialand - My Happy Place

Using the phrase happy place makes me feel a bit cringe, but I don’t really know how else to describe how much I love Phantasialand. If I close my eyes and think about where I’d most like to be in the world Phantasialand and The Abbey come straight to mind, and I know which one I’d have more fun in at the moment! Ever since my first visit back in 2016 I’ve been in love with Phantasialand and it was time to return after a two year absence. I couldn’t wait for two full days at Phantasialand! We pick this up following Moose On The Loose In Cologne ( Link! ) in snowy Brühl, around 20km south of Cologne. The sight of Brühl Schloss greets you as you exit the train station: UNESCO tick! The next morning we made the walk from the hotel to the park, just before this walk I was convinced to join Strava!  We arrived just before opening and received a golden welcome: The Berlin area Dragon Phantasialand has six dragons and now you’ve seen one of them! You may see more dragons later, but only i...
