Supermarket Weep: Aldi

When you hear the bleep, think about taking part in Supermarket Weep!  With Aldi right next door to Morrisons, it would have been rude to ignore it. Bedford loves collating supermarkets. Dan joins me once again, and we start on the lagers.  We kicked things off with this imitation of a popular beer. I described it as the best crappy lager so far, but still tastes of nothing. Staying on the lagers, we tried this imitation of a popular French beer. Another crappy lager with no taste. But fear not reader, we had more lager to drink…. Of course, this is a take on a popular Scottish beer. It’s amazing how all three of the lagers taste different, but yet taste of nothing. Thankfully, this now concludes the crappy lager section.  Ah! A west coast IPA! A watery mess in a can, sadly.  Then, things took a turn for better…  This was a welcome surprise. A nice, strong caramel taste. I actually enjoyed this beer, not enough to buy it again mind. Time to move to the dark side.  Watery and bland. D

Away Days 23/24: Exeter - Cambridge You’re All That I Want… I’m Finding It Hard To Believe We’re In Devon

Obviously there are other things that I want, but I do love my football team. With a striker onboard, United made the long trip down south to face their most played team, Exeter. With doubts that the game would even go ahead, only the hardcore would join the team in Devon. The crowd went mild, as near a Bristol we found out that the game was on! I didn’t fancy a ten hour round trip drive in a day, so I collected DJ from St Andrew’s church and we drove to park up at The Abbey, to get the away bus. We set off at just after seven and made one stop on the way to Devon, where I paid £9 for this: I’ve never really understood the love for Subway. Options at the services were very limited, so early in the morning. Once in Exeter, we did what all sensible people would do and found a pub. A proper geezers pub, which translates to a pub I wouldn’t go back to. Not a nice atmosphere and a poor Guinness served in a plastic cup. We made our exit and headed to the ground, where we found no improveme

Supermarket Weep. Is Supermarket Own Brand Beer Really That Bad? Morrisons.

Some ideas are much better than others. Buying beers from supermarkets is something I tend to avoid, in order to support local pubs, bars and taprooms. That being said, friend of blog, Dan, and I love a beer cred and have often joked about trying beers like Tesco value lager. We had a big night in planned, to watch Hull v Norwich on TV, and decided this was the time to try start this new challenge; which supermarket has the best own brand beer. Welcome to Supermarket Weep, the series where we try supermarket beers and probably weep during and after. Let’s go. Cambridge feels like the supermarket capital of The UK, they’re everywhere you look. For some reason, there’s no Morrisons. Bedford, the base of our big night in, does have one. Here are our reviews of what we found.  We decided to start with the lowest ABV, at 2.8% Original Bitter exceeded our lower than low expectations. It’s certainly not the worst bitter I’ve tried. At 2.8% you can’t expect a full bodied taste, however the ta

Moose On The Loose: Liverpool January 2024 - Mersey Paradise?

With Cambridge United playing sort of nearby Blackburn Rovers in The FA Cup, I saw an ideal opportunity to visit a city I’d never been to. I’d heard good things about the Liverpool beer scene and secretly hoped that I’d bump into Jurgen Klopp, so I could give him a piece of my mind. Sadly I couldn’t locate Mr Klopp, but did manage to gain an insight into the Liverpool beer scene.  We drove to Liverpool, via Bedford, and stayed opposite the Albert Dock. Here’s some culture: Liverpool was a surprisingly pretty city. There’s the culture portion of this blog.  Driving to the hotel we noticed The Deadly Crafty Beer Company, would be rude not to. Upon arrival we were issued a beer menu! This place had a great range of mostly international craft beers. I opted for WCIPA from a Brooklyn micro brewery. It was a strong start to the weekend. We got denied our next venue of choice, they were closing, and recommended that we visited The Red Lion.  It looked promising.  The Red Lion turned out to b
