In Search Of The Best Guinness In Cambridge: Part 6 - The Eagle Has Not Landed

 Welcome back to the Guinness challenge, I can’t believe that we are already up to part 6! Here’s a quick runaround of the places I’ve sampled Guinness in recently. 


I decided to kick part 6 off with a visit to two central Greene King pubs. The Bath House is most famous for being next door to The Eagle. To be honest, I find this place ghastly. Paying £5.90 for a 1.75/5 Guinness feels like daylight robbery. 


The dirty glass really topped off a bad Guinness tick. Things could only get better in The Eagle right? 

You’d hope. Cambridge’s biggest tourist trap was packed, even on a Tuesday. The Eagle has history, I’ll give it that, but in my opinion that’s all it has going for it. The Guinness was a marginally better 2/5. The cask ale looked flat. 


On a post football Saturday afternoon, I let friend of the blog, Nathan, be in charge of choosing the pub to meet in. Surprisingly he went for The Duke Of Cambridge, a pub I hadn’t visited since 2019. To be honest I didn’t have high hopes for the Guinness here. 

Dirty glass again… though to my surprise, it was a decent drop! 3.25/5. 

Next up, I make a return to The Regal. The former cinema and former largest spoons in The UK is far from my fave pub to visit. I’ve got nothing against spoons, but I’ve had a few questionable nights out at The Regal…
Average Guinness, 2.5/5.

Fast forward and few weeks, where I get a text inviting me to The Waterman. A new Guinness tick! 
The Guinness is creamy nectar, a solid 3.25 out of 5!

    I get the impression they’re not overly bothered about all the faults I found. Sad.

  It’s been a while, but Supermarket Weep is back! The series where myself and some ‘lucky’ guests, try supermarket own brand beer and beers brewed specifically for supermarkets. In previous episodes we all went wild in the aisles of Tesco and Aldi. Phantasialand - My Happy Place

Using the phrase happy place makes me feel a bit cringe, but I don’t really know how else to describe how much I love Phantasialand. If I close my eyes and think about where I’d most like to be in the world Phantasialand and The Abbey come straight to mind, and I know which one I’d have more fun in at the moment! Ever since my first visit back in 2016 I’ve been in love with Phantasialand and it was time to return after a two year absence. I couldn’t wait for two full days at Phantasialand! We pick this up following Moose On The Loose In Cologne ( Link! ) in snowy Brühl, around 20km south of Cologne. The sight of Brühl Schloss greets you as you exit the train station: UNESCO tick! Moose On The Loose: Have I Found The Best Ever Crisp Flavour? Manchester.

 Join me for another pub trip around Manchester! We will swing by some old favourites and potentially make some new ones! Really this is part one of the three part series, but part two is already released so let’s get to it! I headed straight for Track as soon as I made it off of the train at Manchester Piccadilly. Track is one of my all time favourite taprooms! I opted for the Aspern and Navigator. Aspern is a Vienna style lager and was really nice. Navigator is an Irish Dry style stout and whilst it was ok, I found it a bit sweet for my taste. Beers dispatched it was time for a trip round the corner to another old favourite!  Sureshot is another brilliant taproom! What Did I Say Roy? A west coast pale that really hit the dream spot of lingering bitterness and refreshment. We didn’t have far to go for the next pint!  Balance Taproom is almost next door to Sureshot!
