Phantasialand - My Happy Place

Using the phrase happy place makes me feel a bit cringe, but I don’t really know how else to describe how much I love Phantasialand. If I close my eyes and think about where I’d most like to be in the world Phantasialand and The Abbey come straight to mind, and I know which one I’d have more fun in at the moment! Ever since my first visit back in 2016 I’ve been in love with Phantasialand and it was time to return after a two year absence. I couldn’t wait for two full days at Phantasialand!

We pick this up following Moose On The Loose In Cologne (Link!) in snowy Brühl, around 20km south of Cologne. The sight of Brühl Schloss greets you as you exit the train station:

UNESCO tick!

The next morning we made the walk from the hotel to the park, just before this walk I was convinced to join Strava!

We arrived just before opening and received a golden welcome:

The Berlin area Dragon

Phantasialand has six dragons and now you’ve seen one of them! You may see more dragons later, but only if you behave and tell your friends to read Beermoose!

We decided to start with a ride on Maus au Chocolat, a shooting ride where you have to protect cakes from mice!

I’ve never been very good at it

We then visited Hotel Tartuffe, which in my opinion is one of the best fun houses! I won’t reveal all of the secrets within, but there is a rather crazy start and lots of moments which make you say Wupps!

The exit is also an amazing slide!

We then walked round to Wuze Town, a mostly indoor area of the park, that’s home to not one but two spinning coasters! Winja’s Fear and Force! Which are intertwined and also slightly different from each other.

Winjas Fear is my favourite because it’s slightly faster and more punchy!

In the mood for another coaster we headed towards Crazy Bats. Once called Temple Of The Nighthawk, this coaster now has a virtual reality option. I didn’t opt for the VR as I don’t seem to see 3D well when it’s on a screen.

I think it’s fair to call Crazy Bats lift hill the coaster.

Next up we made our way to Deep In Africa which is the home of Black Mamba, a B&M invert. Sadly I don’t have any photos of Black Mamba! It’s brilliant though! A compact and forceful invert, which interacts beautifully with the theming!

Next to Black Mamba is this:

A really fun adventure trail! I would recommend that you don’t complete the trail when it’s covered in ice and therefore very slippery! Somehow we all stayed upright!

After all that excitement it was time for some food, and a beer of course!

Pork with roast potatoes and pork gravy! It was incredible! Much better than the noodles I had the next day.

Obviously the best thing to do after stuffing your face is ride the fastest coaster in the park!

Taron is still one of the best coasters in the world, but it’s important to let it warm up. I will never get tired of its interaction with the terrain, the airtime or the highlight of the ride which is the second launch! We managed a few night rides during our visit, including front row rides!

In order to celebrate our rides on Taron we had another beer and a crepe!

Prost!

Kinder chocolate crepe!

The beer on offer next to Taron is Andechser Hell which was fresh and crisp, or Weissbier Dunkel which sweet and smooth!

We then walked round to Mystery Castle, via a frozen River Quest:

No crazy river quests this visit!

I’m not going to spoil Mystery Castle for you, just ride it! It’s brilliant fun! You may ever get to meet a dragon at the end!

With the light fading we headed to Fly, which is also amazing during the day!

Fly is easily my favourite flying coaster and in my opinion outclasses the offerings from B&M. Fly is also the best enjoyed front row!

We then took time to check out the lights around the park and the evening fire show!

Big snowman!

Main Berlin area

Dragons!

A rare sight of me wearing a coat

Fire!

We ended both our evenings with food and beer, is there any better way to end a great day? The first even was spent at Brühler Wirthaus. Serving Gaffel and amazing schnitzel!

Schnitzel with bacon and cheese!

The next evening we visited Vellini, based in the heart of Brühl. I opted for Schnitzel again and washed it down with a Krombacher pils.

The sauce was as thick as curry sauce and was amazing! I love schnitzel so much!

That was our time at Phantasialand, at least on this visit. I just love this theme park so much. An incredible selection of rides, food and drinks. It’s clear that the people running this place care and actually put effort into making it a great day out for visitors. This is something that I found lacking with the UK theme parks for several years now. The winter event was brilliant and I commend the effort that went into turning Phantasialand into a winter wonderland full of lights, music, shows and theming.

Thanks for reading and bis später Phantasialand!

Supermarket Weep - Lidl

It’s been a while, but Supermarket Weep is back! The series where myself and some ‘lucky’ guests, try supermarket own brand beer and beers brewed specifically for supermarkets. In previous episodes we all went wild in the aisles of Tesco and Aldi. Welcome to Supermarket Weep - Lidl.  A piece of advice for you, don’t trust the terrible cupboard holders that these beers come in. I opted to go without a bag or a trolley and regretted that decision.  The beers all fell out of the cupboard and onto the floor. I stuffed my pockets with some of the beers, which caused my shorts to fall down. A new low for me is accidentally exposing myself in a Lidl… Trolley to the rescue! Ignore than BrewDog, that was for something else!  For this episode I was joined by friends of the blog, Dan and John. We kicked things off with Excelsior Lager, a French inspired beer. This was bad, like really bad. It’s a really watery beer, with a weird sweet taste. Awful.  Next up was San Marti...

2024 In Review & The Beer Moose Awards!

“Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time” sang Pink Floyd in 1973. They’re sort of right, each year feels shorter than the last. In fact, it does not feel like a year since I was last writing a blog like this one. Contary to what Pink Floyd said, I found time to do quite a lot in 2024! I rode a new personal best 211 rollercoasters! 2024 will remembered as a bit of a rollercoaster (sorry). Great heights and moments balanced by a devastating loss and a rather poor Cambridge United team. This blog is aiming to be a review of my year, with some awards thrown in! Let’s get into it!  January:  January started with an FA Cup tie, away to Blackburn. I decided that Blackburn was sort of near Liverpool, so like all good away days we made it into a pub weekend.  It was an absolute goal fest! Sadly, like most goal fests The U’s are involved with, it ended with United on the losing side. 5-2 Blackburn.  Golden bird I liked Liverpool, it’s a smart and nic...

Moose On The Loose - Lincoln: Imping Over The Line

I was excited to visit Lincoln properly for the first time. Last year I visited just to watch the football and only managed to get to one pub. Therefore a proper visit was long overdue. I was joined by a full squad of friends and here’s what we got up to. An early start at Cambridge station saw us arrive before eleven in Lincoln. Every train we rode arrived on time, what a miracle! After checking into the hotel we made our way to The Golden Eagle, probably the best football away pub I’ve ever visited!  Pints of Castle Rock beers, including Harvest Pale and How High Is The Moon, were consumed as excitement for the game started to build. Last season Cambridge were hammered 6-0 by Lincoln, as we walked to the ground I hopped history was not going to repeat itself. Untied in Endeavour  A collector’s item James Gibbons goal gave bottom of the league Cambridge a solid away point from a game that in truth they should have taken more from. Though it was nice not to be having co...
