Moose On The Loose In Venice! Part 1: Is There Good Beer In Venice?

Venice is a city I always wanted to visit. I knew it wasn’t going to be a top beer destination, but was excited to see the sights and eat some good food. Here’s what me and some friends got up to!

We stayed fairly centrally at a hotel run but who I can only describe as a local character klaxon, that’s not a compliment. Anyway, we walked to St Mark’s Square:

We visited Doge’s Palace, which was pretty but I don’t think it’s worth the entry fee. It does have one of the biggest rooms in Europe, allegedly.

There was one bit with a sign saying please don’t stop in the corridor to take photos, however I accidentally ignored it.

We then climbed (went in the lift) to the top of St Mark’s Campanile. The views were great!

It was then time for a beer, so we headed here:

The beer was a bit average, but at least I got to try some localish beers.

With the light fading we went to see Rialto Bridge.

More on that later, but first food!

The carbonara was tasty! As was the beer, I wasn’t expecting a bock in Italy!

We then grabbed a gelato and went to see the Rialto Bridge at night, which was stunning.

The beer place I most wanted to visit was on the way back to the hotel!

II Santa Bevitore is strange. It’s the only place I’ve ever seen a sign asking for customers to be patient because “it can take up to five minutes to pour a beer”. They have those plastic flute shaped things on all keg taps, making the beer as frothy as possible. Despite this strange attitude to froth, the beer range is pretty good! One tip, don’t drink dark beer in Italy. I tried some local dark beer and it was rancid. Every light beer I tasted was pretty good! Mosaico by Barbaforte was amazing! It was everything I want from a west coast pale, bitter and hoppy!

That’s a wrap on day 1! Thanks for reading!

Supermarket Weep - Lidl

It’s been a while, but Supermarket Weep is back! The series where myself and some ‘lucky’ guests, try supermarket own brand beer and beers brewed specifically for supermarkets. In previous episodes we all went wild in the aisles of Tesco and Aldi. Welcome to Supermarket Weep - Lidl.  A piece of advice for you, don’t trust the terrible cupboard holders that these beers come in. I opted to go without a bag or a trolley and regretted that decision.  The beers all fell out of the cupboard and onto the floor. I stuffed my pockets with some of the beers, which caused my shorts to fall down. A new low for me is accidentally exposing myself in a Lidl… Trolley to the rescue! Ignore than BrewDog, that was for something else!  For this episode I was joined by friends of the blog, Dan and John. We kicked things off with Excelsior Lager, a French inspired beer. This was bad, like really bad. It’s a really watery beer, with a weird sweet taste. Awful.  Next up was San Marti...

2024 In Review & The Beer Moose Awards!

“Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time” sang Pink Floyd in 1973. They’re sort of right, each year feels shorter than the last. In fact, it does not feel like a year since I was last writing a blog like this one. Contary to what Pink Floyd said, I found time to do quite a lot in 2024! I rode a new personal best 211 rollercoasters! 2024 will remembered as a bit of a rollercoaster (sorry). Great heights and moments balanced by a devastating loss and a rather poor Cambridge United team. This blog is aiming to be a review of my year, with some awards thrown in! Let’s get into it!  January:  January started with an FA Cup tie, away to Blackburn. I decided that Blackburn was sort of near Liverpool, so like all good away days we made it into a pub weekend.  It was an absolute goal fest! Sadly, like most goal fests The U’s are involved with, it ended with United on the losing side. 5-2 Blackburn.  Golden bird I liked Liverpool, it’s a smart and nic...

Moose On The Loose - Lincoln: Imping Over The Line

I was excited to visit Lincoln properly for the first time. Last year I visited just to watch the football and only managed to get to one pub. Therefore a proper visit was long overdue. I was joined by a full squad of friends and here’s what we got up to. An early start at Cambridge station saw us arrive before eleven in Lincoln. Every train we rode arrived on time, what a miracle! After checking into the hotel we made our way to The Golden Eagle, probably the best football away pub I’ve ever visited!  Pints of Castle Rock beers, including Harvest Pale and How High Is The Moon, were consumed as excitement for the game started to build. Last season Cambridge were hammered 6-0 by Lincoln, as we walked to the ground I hopped history was not going to repeat itself. Untied in Endeavour  A collector’s item James Gibbons goal gave bottom of the league Cambridge a solid away point from a game that in truth they should have taken more from. Though it was nice not to be having co...
