May 20th, remember the date, is my birthday. On my actual birthday I’ll be stood in a big white tent on Jesus Green, so my birthday drinks had to be the closest weekend available. I decided that I wanted a relaxed walk around the beer mile, with some pubs thrown in if there was time. It was a really great day out filled with mates, beers, laughs and chats about rollercoaster spreadsheets. What more could one ask for?
Some of the group arrived early, we decided to have a beer in this box park thing.
Who doesn’t like paying £7.50 for an average London Guinness though! The full squad! I really like sitting on the raised bit here, it’s a great vantage point to see all of the really drunk people come in and fall over.
It’s a slightly longer walk over to The Kernel, and you have to ensure you stand between the painted lines (not pictured) or you get told off.
You get a decent view of The Shad! The beer was not decent though. I didn’t really rate the Dunkel. I don’t think The Kernel is a must visit on the Mile.We started at Tower Bridge Arms. It’s a BrewDog owned pub, it is quite the contrast to their bars. I had the Siren Suspended in Tower Bridge and it was really nice and citrusy!
We had a bit of a walk to our next pub, but we got to see some sights along the way!
The pub we had been aiming for, can’t remember the name, was closed for filming. We continued walking towards London Blackfriars and hoped a pub would appear to break up our journey.
As if by magic.
A pretty decent London Guinness. Quite a few pubs in the financial area of London don’t open at weekends, The Sugar Loaf was closing at 21:00!
We decided to walk to Fleet Street and noticed a pub called Punch Tavern, it looked interesting so we headed in.
A nice little pub inside, but a below average London Guinness. Next up we went to Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese. I forgot to take any photos. The pub was full of American tourists and a number of beers were not available. I had a Taddy lager, which was bland at best. Not as good as their Alpine Lager.
Our day ended sort of how it started, with a London Black at The Holy Tavern.
Then it was home time! Thanks to everyone for celebrating my birthday with me, I had a brilliant day! We all know that I love a pub cred and I gained five.
That's quite a head on that London Black ! Lovely pint though.
ReplyDeleteGlad you had a good day. Bermondsey seems a bit old hat these days, but I had great beer at Anspach & Hopday & Moor recently. You might find some different views on Kernel, though !
For sure! I was surprised at how disappointed I was with Kernel. It used to be one of my faves.
