Moose On The Loose: Have I Found The Best Ever Crisp Flavour? Manchester.

Join me for another pub trip around Manchester! We will swing by some old favourites and potentially make some new ones! Really this is part one of the three part series, but part two is already released so let’s get to it!

I headed straight for Track as soon as I made it off of the train at Manchester Piccadilly. Track is one of my all time favourite taprooms!

I opted for the Aspern and Navigator. Aspern is a Vienna style lager and was really nice. Navigator is an Irish Dry style stout and whilst it was ok, I found it a bit sweet for my taste. Beers dispatched it was time for a trip round the corner to another old favourite!

Sureshot is another brilliant taproom! What Did I Say Roy? A west coast pale that really hit the dream spot of lingering bitterness and refreshment. We didn’t have far to go for the next pint!

Balance Taproom is almost next door to Sureshot! Balance specialise in fruited beers which aren’t really my thing, so I had a lager from Utopian Brewing. Rach opted for a sour, I think.

A really nice place to have a drink

It was then food time and I made my first visit to Bundobust. I was actually slightly apprehensive to visit my first non meat curry house. We will get to the food, but it’s beer first of course. We both went for Python lager, got to have a lager with a curry right?! It seems that we caught the end of the keg as the beer served to us was murky and almost two different colours! It was happily exchanged for fresh beer out of the new keg.

Much better!

The food was amazing, I was so impressed!

I can’t remember everything we had but boy was it good! I loved the spicy cauliflower, veggie fries things and the bread! 10/10 would go back!

We visited another favourite to wash our food down, The City Arms. A strong contender for best pub in England, The City Arms serves incredible Titanic Plum Porter. As I went to order some Plum Porter a member of bar staff asked if my name is Dan. I was rather surprised to be recognised! Turns out it was a former member of the CAMRA young members group that I was national chair of.

Good colour coordination

Excellent Plum Porter consumed, we headed to get me a pub cred!

Any guesses?

My first visit to Cask and it won’t be my last! I seem to have forgotten to take any photos inside at Cask, but it’s easily somewhere I could have spent longer. I had a lovely pint of Jet, a stout from Ossett Brewery.
From cask we headed to Peveril of The Peak.

A very photogenic pub!

Here I had possibly the best pint of Landlord I’ve ever had.

The pub was packed, which is great, but we were sort of forced to stand in the way. We decided to move on to Rain Bar.

Here I had a top pint of JW Lees Bitter! It was a much nicer beer than I remembered it. We had time for one more stop and headed towards The Briton’s Protection.

Sadly this wasn’t a great pint and the pub wasn’t really one I enjoyed being in.

Now we are fast forwarding to Sunday afternoon. Saturday evening was spent in Stockport and there will be a blog about that soon!

We kicked our Sunday off at Port Street Beer House, a pub I missed on my last visit to Manchester.
A thing of beauty

Hopton turned out to be everything I want from a pale and more! It was a strong contender for pint of the weekend! From here we headed to Northern Monk.

Where thirds of smoked hefeweizen, stout and pancake stout slipped down with ease. Three really lovely beers. Our final stop before my train home was at Cafe Beermoth.

Plenty of choice!

Top tier pint of Stone’s Throw from Runaway Brewery and also top tier crisps! What a flavour!

That was a great way to end my time in Manchester. Plenty of laughs, pints and crisps. I can’t ask for more than that.

Thanks for reading.

2024 In Review & The Beer Moose Awards!

“Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time” sang Pink Floyd in 1973. They’re sort of right, each year feels shorter than the last. In fact, it does not feel like a year since I was last writing a blog like this one. Contary to what Pink Floyd said, I found time to do quite a lot in 2024! I rode a new personal best 211 rollercoasters! 2024 will remembered as a bit of a rollercoaster (sorry). Great heights and moments balanced by a devastating loss and a rather poor Cambridge United team. This blog is aiming to be a review of my year, with some awards thrown in! Let’s get into it!  January:  January started with an FA Cup tie, away to Blackburn. I decided that Blackburn was sort of near Liverpool, so like all good away days we made it into a pub weekend.  It was an absolute goal fest! Sadly, like most goal fests The U’s are involved with, it ended with United on the losing side. 5-2 Blackburn.  Golden bird I liked Liverpool, it’s a smart and nic...

Smile Like You Mean It: The Story of My Friendship With Rach, Mental Health and Our Latest Adventure.

I’m very fortunate to have great friends in my life, I don’t think you can put a value on good people. People who have your back, make you laugh, pick you up if you need it, advise you, complement you and at times challenge you. I’m not a great lover of texting or messaging, because it just isn’t the same as being together in real life. To me, a sign of a great friend is someone you can spend weeks or months away from, but when you do meet again, it’s like you were never apart. People come and go, the best people stay.  In 2011, whilst at secondary school, I was elected to Sports Council. At this time I was failing to accept that my rugby playing days were nearly over. I have a lifelong problem with my back, it was getting worse. I was seeing two physios a week, hours of laying on my front having my back looked at, coupled with loading up on whatever pain relief the Dr would prescribe me. That was all to try and get through the rugby matches. Eventually, my consultant, Dr Jen...

Moose On The Loose - Lincoln: Imping Over The Line

I was excited to visit Lincoln properly for the first time. Last year I visited just to watch the football and only managed to get to one pub. Therefore a proper visit was long overdue. I was joined by a full squad of friends and here’s what we got up to. An early start at Cambridge station saw us arrive before eleven in Lincoln. Every train we rode arrived on time, what a miracle! After checking into the hotel we made our way to The Golden Eagle, probably the best football away pub I’ve ever visited!  Pints of Castle Rock beers, including Harvest Pale and How High Is The Moon, were consumed as excitement for the game started to build. Last season Cambridge were hammered 6-0 by Lincoln, as we walked to the ground I hopped history was not going to repeat itself. Untied in Endeavour  A collector’s item James Gibbons goal gave bottom of the league Cambridge a solid away point from a game that in truth they should have taken more from. Though it was nice not to be having co...
