Moose On The Loose - Hertford!

Any excuse for a pub crawl right? With a friend of the blog having a birthday, I headed to Hertford for a stroll around some Hertfordshire pubs! I think Hertford is a nice town and has a decent pub scene, if you ignore McMullens. You may be aware that McMullen’s are probably my least favourite brewery. I find their beers bland and usually very badly kept, even in their own pubs.

We kick things off in The Great Eastern, right by Hertford North Station.
Inside was a train lovers paradise! Plenty of train tat on display. The inside had a dive bar/ very locals pubs feel, almost as if the piano stopped when we walked in. We therefore headed to the garden.

An eclectic beer garden for sure! Beer wise, it was McMullens, I opted for SIPA from McMullen’s ‘craft’ offshoot Rivertown. A pretty bland beer, not the best start.

Next we made the short walk round the corner to Saracens Head. What a contrast! Inside was light, bright and modern!

We again opted for the garden:

A lovely Guinness in a lovely beer garden! I hadn’t visited this pub before and certainly recommend it!

The Dog and Whistle was next:
Dreaded McMullens again… I went for a Guinness:

Don’t be fooled by the appearance, the Guinness here was trash.

The real horror in this pub was this:

That is easily the worst thing I’ve seen in a pub, so far.

The Hertford Bell was next:

For politeness I’ll say it’s rough around the edges. The Guinness was ok and we made it out alive!

We then returned to a previous favourite from last year, The Old Barge.

A lovely, traditional pub.

A really tasty pint!

The food stop was next!

Beer on offer was Hofmeister Helles, which was decent! I had chilli to eat and that was also decent. We then headed to the spoons, Six Templars, for dessert. The cask beer was tired but the sambuca was not!

We finished the night in what I think is the best Hertford Pub, The Old Cross Tavern:

I had the Thornbridge and New River, both were delicious!

Thanks for reading!

Supermarket Weep - Lidl

It’s been a while, but Supermarket Weep is back! The series where myself and some ‘lucky’ guests, try supermarket own brand beer and beers brewed specifically for supermarkets. In previous episodes we all went wild in the aisles of Tesco and Aldi. Welcome to Supermarket Weep - Lidl.  A piece of advice for you, don’t trust the terrible cupboard holders that these beers come in. I opted to go without a bag or a trolley and regretted that decision.  The beers all fell out of the cupboard and onto the floor. I stuffed my pockets with some of the beers, which caused my shorts to fall down. A new low for me is accidentally exposing myself in a Lidl… Trolley to the rescue! Ignore than BrewDog, that was for something else!  For this episode I was joined by friends of the blog, Dan and John. We kicked things off with Excelsior Lager, a French inspired beer. This was bad, like really bad. It’s a really watery beer, with a weird sweet taste. Awful.  Next up was San Marti...

Phantasialand - My Happy Place

Using the phrase happy place makes me feel a bit cringe, but I don’t really know how else to describe how much I love Phantasialand. If I close my eyes and think about where I’d most like to be in the world Phantasialand and The Abbey come straight to mind, and I know which one I’d have more fun in at the moment! Ever since my first visit back in 2016 I’ve been in love with Phantasialand and it was time to return after a two year absence. I couldn’t wait for two full days at Phantasialand! We pick this up following Moose On The Loose In Cologne ( Link! ) in snowy Brühl, around 20km south of Cologne. The sight of Brühl Schloss greets you as you exit the train station: UNESCO tick! The next morning we made the walk from the hotel to the park, just before this walk I was convinced to join Strava!  We arrived just before opening and received a golden welcome: The Berlin area Dragon Phantasialand has six dragons and now you’ve seen one of them! You may see more dragons later, but only i...

Moose On The Loose: Have I Found The Best Ever Crisp Flavour? Manchester.

Join me for another pub trip around Manchester! We will swing by some old favourites and potentially make some new ones! Really this is part one of the three part series, but part two is already released so let’s get to it! I headed straight for Track as soon as I made it off of the train at Manchester Piccadilly. Track is one of my all time favourite taprooms! I opted for the Aspern and Navigator. Aspern is a Vienna style lager and was really nice. Navigator is an Irish Dry style stout and whilst it was ok, I found it a bit sweet for my taste. Beers dispatched it was time for a trip round the corner to another old favourite!  Sureshot is another brilliant taproom! What Did I Say Roy? A west coast pale that really hit the dream spot of lingering bitterness and refreshment. We didn’t have far to go for the next pint!  Balance Taproom is almost next door to Sureshot! Balance specialise in fruited beers which aren’t really my thing, so I had a lager from Utopian Brewing. Ra...
