Moose On The Loose In Nottingham!

I mean seriously, why is there an alien on the roof? Anyway, welcome to another edition of Moose On The Loose! A feature where I travel somewhere to watch Cambridge United lose (spoiler alert) and then drown my sorrows. A visit to Notts County opened up a return to Nottingham for the first time in quite a while.

We kick things off with some Castle Rock, who are one of my fave breweries.

Proper pub

The Vat and Fiddle is a brilliant pub. Pint of Black Gold mild and Mars Bar inspired stout Space Junk went down a treat as excitement built for the game.

Decent range

Tasty!

We then made the short trip to the ground.

It’s a nice ground for sure but the stewards here were difficult, power hungry perhaps. I was hungry for three points but after a game of mostly nothingness which you defo don’t want to lose, Cambridge found a way to lose 2-0. Thirsty for something more cheerful we headed to Liquid Light Brewing.

Awesome little bar

Do you think he’s posing?

Loved the Pink Floyd art!

I really enjoyed Liquid Light, it’s just a cool place to be. Chilled, good atmosphere, art and great beers! China Cat Sunflower was drinking really well.

Next up we visited one of my fave breweries, which I’d wanted to visit for ages, Neon Raptor!

Plastic glasses due to a pagan market outside, yes really.

The pagan’s left on their brooms and the real glasses came out

Neon Raptor are just a fantastic brewery and certainly one of my favourites. Retro Racer and the ninth anniversary impy were just the job. The staff here were great and I thank them for taking time to speak with me and managing to find me a pint glass to buy.

By this point we were hungry and local legend Ed had recommended that we eat at Kean’s Head and my word he was right. The curry here was amazing.

Tucked away

I actually really like this

Chicken curry with chorizo, honestly some of the best curry I’ve ever had!

From here we headed to The Canalhouse, a legend of the local scene due to this rather special feature:

Boats

Beer here was perfectly good!

Just a short walk away is Angel Microbrewery.

To be honest I found their own beers hit and miss and I always didn’t enjoy paying £6.90 for a pint of nitro stout! It’s meant to be cheap in the north! Also wrongs were righted by Treason by Stancil.

We decided to call it a night.

The next morning we were bright eyed, bushy tailed and fulled by a spoon breakfast. Our first port of call was Nottingham Castle where we learned that it burnt down. Luckily some geezer with a fair bit of dosh built a big house which is now the museum.

The view

We rounded the corner and headed to Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, which is supposedly the oldest pub in the UK.

The Guinness here was decent but the pub itself felt like more a tourist attraction than anything else. At least it’s ticked off. Round the corner is another pub which claims to be the oldest in The UK and apparently has the papers to prove it.

 It doesn’t look as old…..

Personality is of course more important than looks, at least that’s what I tell myself, and this place has lots! Local characters, rock and metal music and Titanic Plum Porter! The dream trio. I forgot to take a photo of the plum Porter,

Again round the corner is another old pub, this one is grade two listed I’ll have you know.

Here we enjoyed a decent roast dinner and some decent beer from Nottingham Brewery.

We made one last stop, Brew Tavern and look what they had!

A fitting finish to a great weekend (minus the football which is always the worst bit). Thanks for reading.

Supermarket Weep - Lidl

It’s been a while, but Supermarket Weep is back! The series where myself and some ‘lucky’ guests, try supermarket own brand beer and beers brewed specifically for supermarkets. In previous episodes we all went wild in the aisles of Tesco and Aldi. Welcome to Supermarket Weep - Lidl.  A piece of advice for you, don’t trust the terrible cupboard holders that these beers come in. I opted to go without a bag or a trolley and regretted that decision.  The beers all fell out of the cupboard and onto the floor. I stuffed my pockets with some of the beers, which caused my shorts to fall down. A new low for me is accidentally exposing myself in a Lidl… Trolley to the rescue! Ignore than BrewDog, that was for something else!  For this episode I was joined by friends of the blog, Dan and John. We kicked things off with Excelsior Lager, a French inspired beer. This was bad, like really bad. It’s a really watery beer, with a weird sweet taste. Awful.  Next up was San Marti...

Phantasialand - My Happy Place

Using the phrase happy place makes me feel a bit cringe, but I don’t really know how else to describe how much I love Phantasialand. If I close my eyes and think about where I’d most like to be in the world Phantasialand and The Abbey come straight to mind, and I know which one I’d have more fun in at the moment! Ever since my first visit back in 2016 I’ve been in love with Phantasialand and it was time to return after a two year absence. I couldn’t wait for two full days at Phantasialand! We pick this up following Moose On The Loose In Cologne ( Link! ) in snowy Brühl, around 20km south of Cologne. The sight of Brühl Schloss greets you as you exit the train station: UNESCO tick! The next morning we made the walk from the hotel to the park, just before this walk I was convinced to join Strava!  We arrived just before opening and received a golden welcome: The Berlin area Dragon Phantasialand has six dragons and now you’ve seen one of them! You may see more dragons later, but only i...

Moose On The Loose - Lincoln: Imping Over The Line

I was excited to visit Lincoln properly for the first time. Last year I visited just to watch the football and only managed to get to one pub. Therefore a proper visit was long overdue. I was joined by a full squad of friends and here’s what we got up to. An early start at Cambridge station saw us arrive before eleven in Lincoln. Every train we rode arrived on time, what a miracle! After checking into the hotel we made our way to The Golden Eagle, probably the best football away pub I’ve ever visited!  Pints of Castle Rock beers, including Harvest Pale and How High Is The Moon, were consumed as excitement for the game started to build. Last season Cambridge were hammered 6-0 by Lincoln, as we walked to the ground I hopped history was not going to repeat itself. Untied in Endeavour  A collector’s item James Gibbons goal gave bottom of the league Cambridge a solid away point from a game that in truth they should have taken more from. Though it was nice not to be having co...
