Away Days 25/26: KaiKai With The Curler! Fleetwood.

Things are currently looking good for Cambridge United, which is something that I don’t often get to say! Back on the road last week for a long trip up to Fleetwood, I left Brampton at 08:15 and we arrived around 13:30 and my first thought of Fleetwood was the repugnant smell that met my nostrils as we exited the bus, outside of the Fishermen Friend factory.

Crossing a tram line to get to a stadium is a new one!

As we walked to the ground we found it closed up and deserted. It turns out that the stand we had tickets for was closed so we had to walk round to the main entrance. Once inside I checked out the refreshments on offer.

Madri was the only draught beer on offer and cost me £6.50! £6.50 in Fleetwood! The popcorn chicken was really nice though!

Me and Dan had standing tickets but were told we could stand if we went to the far end of the stand. I’d heard Fleetwood were a really friendly club but that’s not the impression I got to be honest.

I was pretty bullish about this game. We had to win. Fleetwood aren’t a good side and this club is nothing more than a non league club that some rich bloke bought for a hobby. Their recent success in the football league is to be admired but this club didn’t feel or look very football league.

I found it strange that they built a new stand in front of the old one. Wonder why they didn’t knock it down.

Felt very non league when the ball got stuck on the roof.

Cambridge dominated the first half and really the game should have been out of sight by half time, which Cambridge went into leading 1-0. A simply sublime Sully KaiKai free kick was the difference between *r sides. It is easily one of the best goals I’ve seen live! Fleetwood didn’t offer much throughout the game and Cambridge were left to regret missed chances as The Cod Army scored from the spot to make it 1:1. Cometh the hour cometh the man as Gibbo struck with around ten mins left to give The U’s their deserved lead back. Another great win on the road!

Must be one of the lowest league attendances we have played in front of

Where’s Dan?

Thanks for reading!

Supermarket Weep - Lidl

It’s been a while, but Supermarket Weep is back! The series where myself and some ‘lucky’ guests, try supermarket own brand beer and beers brewed specifically for supermarkets. In previous episodes we all went wild in the aisles of Tesco and Aldi. Welcome to Supermarket Weep - Lidl.  A piece of advice for you, don’t trust the terrible cupboard holders that these beers come in. I opted to go without a bag or a trolley and regretted that decision.  The beers all fell out of the cupboard and onto the floor. I stuffed my pockets with some of the beers, which caused my shorts to fall down. A new low for me is accidentally exposing myself in a Lidl… Trolley to the rescue! Ignore than BrewDog, that was for something else!  For this episode I was joined by friends of the blog, Dan and John. We kicked things off with Excelsior Lager, a French inspired beer. This was bad, like really bad. It’s a really watery beer, with a weird sweet taste. Awful.  Next up was San Marti...

Phantasialand - My Happy Place

Using the phrase happy place makes me feel a bit cringe, but I don’t really know how else to describe how much I love Phantasialand. If I close my eyes and think about where I’d most like to be in the world Phantasialand and The Abbey come straight to mind, and I know which one I’d have more fun in at the moment! Ever since my first visit back in 2016 I’ve been in love with Phantasialand and it was time to return after a two year absence. I couldn’t wait for two full days at Phantasialand! We pick this up following Moose On The Loose In Cologne ( Link! ) in snowy Brühl, around 20km south of Cologne. The sight of Brühl Schloss greets you as you exit the train station: UNESCO tick! The next morning we made the walk from the hotel to the park, just before this walk I was convinced to join Strava!  We arrived just before opening and received a golden welcome: The Berlin area Dragon Phantasialand has six dragons and now you’ve seen one of them! You may see more dragons later, but only i...

Moose On The Loose - Lincoln: Imping Over The Line

I was excited to visit Lincoln properly for the first time. Last year I visited just to watch the football and only managed to get to one pub. Therefore a proper visit was long overdue. I was joined by a full squad of friends and here’s what we got up to. An early start at Cambridge station saw us arrive before eleven in Lincoln. Every train we rode arrived on time, what a miracle! After checking into the hotel we made our way to The Golden Eagle, probably the best football away pub I’ve ever visited!  Pints of Castle Rock beers, including Harvest Pale and How High Is The Moon, were consumed as excitement for the game started to build. Last season Cambridge were hammered 6-0 by Lincoln, as we walked to the ground I hopped history was not going to repeat itself. Untied in Endeavour  A collector’s item James Gibbons goal gave bottom of the league Cambridge a solid away point from a game that in truth they should have taken more from. Though it was nice not to be having co...
