Stuttgart Cannstatter Volksfest 2023: Ruined by Devil Rock but maybe I can Break Dance?

A big fair, close to Munich and with five creds. Oh go on then!

My friend and I flew into Stuttgart the previous evening, luckily the thought of creds, German beer and fair rides was enough to overcome the tiredness! Just a side note, creds is a term I’ll use a lot. A cred is a coaster credit and I count coaster credits. Hope that makes sense, let’s get back to it.

The 176th Cannstatter Volksfest

First things first, I was hungry. Time for a traditional German snack

Mit senf of course

Then it was cred time! The 1964 Schwarzkopf Wild Cat coaster, Rock & Roller Coaster (Cred number 526) was a fun coaster to start the trip on. The first drop was good and provided a decent amount of air time.

Next up was a strange ride indeed. Spuk (527) looks more like a ghost train than a coaster, but after riding it I wasn’t sure what to make of it. The coaster elements, basically a couple of drops, made it feel coaster enough for me to count it. The ghost train elements were not really on par with other ghost trains I’ve done. Probably the highlight was getting farted on, and subsequently covered in smoke. +1!

The demon who farted on me

Next up was the Mack Wild Mouse (528) Imagine visiting a large fair and not having to ride a mouse of some variety. Wild is probably the best word to describe this coaster, it was not trimmed at all! My friend and I flew around the hairpin turns!

My friend suggested that we rode a ride that I’d heard a lot about, but never ridden. Break Dance, made by Huss, are probably one of the most loved flat rides in the coaster community. I honestly can’t believe I left it this long to ride one. One word, incredible. This particular Break Dance (Break Dance No.1) was a six armed model, meaning more intense. I absolutely adored the chaos of being thrown around and spun in what felt like every direction! There’s more on Break Dances to come in future blogs.

Turns out, I can break dance.

Back to coasters. It was time for Feuer+Eis (529). Meaning Fire and Ice this coaster was an interesting one. A Mack powered coaster themed to a volcano, with water effects and music from Star Wars. Quite the mixture. A decent plus one.

Next up I was convinced to ride Devil Rock. I’m reliably informed that Devil Rock is a rare ride to see on the fair circuit. Watching it run made me feel slightly queasy, but I’m no wimp. Yeah it ruined me. It was probably just past my line of intense vs enjoyable. When I got off it, I wasn’t sure which way was up. Devil Rock literally left its mark on me, in the form of a lovely bruise on my shoulder. Never say never, but probably never again.

Something more gentle was require after Devil Rock. Therefore we decided to ride a 80m drop tower called Fortress Tower. The tower gave us a great view over Stuttgart but the actual drop was a bit forceless.

There was one cred left to ride. Hilariously, a song making light fun of English people started playing while my friend and I were waiting to ride. Plus one, that’s all I’m going to say. Racing Coaster (530).

Der Polyp, if you know, you know. Sometimes known as a Monster, amongst other things, including one called Jukebox. They’re seriously incredible rides. They aren’t the fastest, nor the spiniest and they’re not the most popular but it’s near impossible to not have a smile on your face after riding one.

In my element

After riding everything we wanted to ride, it was time for a beer! We only really had time to visit one Beer Tent and opted for this one.

Enough of the fake beer, let’s have a real one!
That’s better! Prost!

The beer was a cool and crisp festbier. 4/5 on Untappd. We managed to sit comfortably away from the serious partying in the tent but still got to enjoy the music. The band were fantastic, the highlight was a Nena medley!

Beer dispatched we left the festival to head to our final destination of Munich. Cannstatter Volksfest proved a more than adequate warm up for what was to come. The flat ride selection, mainly Break Dance No.1 and Der Polyp, made up for a not so strong cred line up. Stayed tuned for Munich. Prost for reading!

Smile Like You Mean It: The Story of My Friendship With Rach, Mental Health and Our Latest Adventure.

I’m very fortunate to have great friends in my life, I don’t think you can put a value on good people. People who have your back, make you laugh, pick you up if you need it, advise you, complement you and at times challenge you. I’m not a great lover of texting or messaging, because it just isn’t the same as being together in real life. To me, a sign of a great friend is someone you can spend weeks or months away from, but when you do meet again, it’s like you were never apart. People come and go, the best people stay.  In 2011, whilst at secondary school, I was elected to Sports Council. At this time I was failing to accept that my rugby playing days were nearly over. I have a lifelong problem with my back, it was getting worse. I was seeing two physios a week, hours of laying on my front having my back looked at, coupled with loading up on whatever pain relief the Dr would prescribe me. That was all to try and get through the rugby matches. Eventually, my consultant, Dr Jen...

A RADical Improvement To The Cambridge Beer Scene: The Rad Preview Night!

It’s so good to see Cambridge’s smallest pub back open! I was invited to the preview night and had a great time. For most of my drinking life, this pub was fairly rubbish. The beer, although cheap, was terrible. Most of it came from a brewery, which no longer exists. I don’t miss it. Enough about rubbish beer though, what’s the new Rad like?  Well, in my opinion, it’s just what Cambridge needed. The beer scene in Cambridge is sadly dominated by Greene King, there are too few places where you can get both a good range of beer and beer served in good condition. The Rad had one of the best ranges of beer, I’ve seen in ages. There was literally something for everyone. From sours, to various types of IPA, impy stouts, lager and bitter! There were some preview night teething issues with the beer screens, but it’s so good to be able to see the beer list, style of beer and strength so clearly! The condition was excellent, as expected.  I sampled beers from Marble, Two Flints an...

Moose On The Loose: Manchester - February 2024: This Is The One

Manchester is probably the most diverse beer city in The UK. It’s got traditional pubs, taprooms and trendy ‘craft’ places, the vast majority of places I’ve been in Manchester have been excellent! This is the story of my second pub trip to Manchester and I’m joined by legend of blog, Rach!  The trip started with a massive error, and it’s not having a night out before an away day, because that is always a good idea. It is using trains. I should have driven, still I got do my first delay and repay. Anyway, on to the beer!  We started at Hops & Boogie, as we needed to do some shopping in Sale.  The Squawk Porter went done a treat!  We then hopped on the tram and headed towards a strong contender for best taproom in The UK, Track.  Rainbow beer board! My least fave type of glass Track’s taproom is spacious, light and has good seating options. Oh and great beer! What more could you want?  Living my best life. We then headed to another taproom, Suresho...
