Moose On The Loose: York - December 2023 Part 2: Animals (Three Different Ones)

“Any fool knows a dog needs a home, a shelter from pigs on the wing.” Thankfully I don’t have any good pubs in my blind spot, I always find them. 

We arrived at The Falcon, soaked. I could get over that, because The Falcon is probably my favourite York pub. There’s a great range of beers from Turning Point, amongst others, which are always on top form. There’s even a dog of the year competition, who doesn’t love some enforced fun? 

The Half Moon stout made me very happy:

Another of my favourite pubs, The Market Cat is must visit when I’m in York. Tasty Thornbridge beers and a great view of York from the top floor! 


 

Once we finished in The Market Cat, we headed to get a pub cred!

The Swan was brilliant. I had a pint of Kirkstall Bitter, followed by a SALT Suede stout. 

Cheese and pickle cheddars are a top tier pub snack. A great little supper to end the evening. 

The next day, after finishing my revision, I fancied another pub cred. I’d never been to The York Tap, so headed straight there. 

Of course I went for this classic. However, I didn’t rate The Tap. Cambridge prices in York and loud but no atmosphere. There is no reason to go here when there’s so many other good pubs. The Sheffield Tap is much better, in just about every way. 

Redemption was needed and quickly. Thankfully, The Ackhorne Inn exists. I love this pub because it does the best Rudgate Ruby Mild in the land. 


We opted to sit in the little beer garden and got talking to some locals about Squeeze. That meant there was time for an Ainsty Ales Oatmeal Stout, which was in perfect condition. It was a shame to leave, but we have a beer agenda. 

We made the short walk to The Golden Ball. 

It’s a really good looking pub, looks aren’t everything though. 

The beer quality in York is a very high, yet consistent bar. The Golden Ball didn’t hold par, sadly. The music was weird too. 

Perhaps saving the best until last now. The Slip Inn has become a firm favourite and also possibly my favourite York pub. Look at this lineup: 

I wanted everything in site. I settled for three pints, across the course of the visit. All beers were in perfect condition. A casual Titanic Plum Porter klaxon was a fitting end to a great few days.

    Great read. Didn't know the Falcon (Tap) had re-opened. Is it still dark and quirky ?

  It’s been a while, but Supermarket Weep is back! The series where myself and some ‘lucky’ guests, try supermarket own brand beer and beers brewed specifically for supermarkets. 2024 In Review & The Beer Moose Awards!

  “Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time” sang Pink Floyd in 1973. They’re sort of right, each year feels shorter than the last. In fact, it does not feel like a year since I was last writing a blog like this one. Contary to what Pink Floyd said, I found time to do quite a lot in 2024! I rode a new personal best 211 rollercoasters! 2024 will remembered as a bit of a rollercoaster (sorry). Great heights and moments balanced by a devastating loss and a rather poor Cambridge United team. This blog is aiming to be a review of my year, with some awards thrown in! Let’s get into it!  January:  January started with an FA Cup tie, away to Blackburn. Moose On The Loose - Lincoln: Imping Over The Line

  I was excited to visit Lincoln properly for the first time. Last year I visited just to watch the football and only managed to get to one pub. Therefore a proper visit was long overdue. I was joined by a full squad of friends and here’s what we got up to. An early start at Cambridge station saw us arrive before eleven in Lincoln. Every train we rode arrived on time, what a miracle! After checking into the hotel we made our way to The Golden Eagle, probably the best football away pub I’ve ever visited!  Pints of Castle Rock beers, including Harvest Pale and How High Is The Moon, were consumed as excitement for the game started to build. Last season Cambridge were hammered 6-0 by Lincoln, as we walked to the ground I hopped history was not going to repeat itself.
