Moose On The Loose In Dublin!

I was really looking forward to my second visit to the Irish capital. There’s plenty of good Guinness, as long as you stay out of the Temple Bar pub! On this visit, I revisited some old favourites and made some new ones.

We kick things off in The Portobello (Richmond St South). It was right by our hotel and the kitchen was open.

I went in with low expectations, but was pleasantly surprised! This was a strong 3.5/5 start to the trip.

The food was pretty decent too!

We then made our way to The Guinness Storehouse. I visited here two years ago and enjoyed it. It’s a self guided tour, which showcases the ingredients, history and advertisement history of Guinness. You also get a tiny taster of overly chilled Guinness before you are sent up to the Gravity Bar for your free pint. On my previous visit you had a choice of Guinness, Cider, Hop House 13, and I think something else. This time it was a choice of Guinness, AF Guinness or Hop House 13. Soft drinks are also available and covered by the voucher you’re given.

I have found the Guinness here average (2/5) on both my visits. It’s honestly probably the worst Guinness I’ve had in Dublin.

We then made our way round the corner to Open Gate Brewery, a Guinness owned bar with a micro brewery.

I started with GOBG Nitro IPA, which was a little disappointing. The Dublin Porter was decent but not life changing. I finished with Guinness Foreign Export Stout, served on nitro, which was really good.

Next up I took the group to an old favourite of mine, where we joined up with the other two members of our group.

Brogans is a strong shout for the best Guinness in Dublin and therefore probably the world. Easily a 4.75-5/5 pint here. It’s a lovely pub.

Almost next door is The Beer Temple, a Galway Bay Brewery pub. We sat in the basement area, which did smell a bit like toilets, but the beer was good! A good craft line up can be a challenge to find in Dublin and if that’s more your thing, Galway Bay are your friends!

I stuck with the dark beer theme and went for Ostara. I’m not going to compare it Guinness because I don’t feel it’s a fair comparison. It was a delicious pint.

We then walked through the dreaded Temple Bar area to The Palace Bar.

This pub is beautiful! The Guinness was a solid 4/5, perhaps there is something good on the main Temple Bar street after all.

We had reached the point where we needed food, happily there was a Nando’s round the corner!

My go to is 1/2 Chicken extra hot, with spicy rice and garlic bread.

Next up was another pub cred!

Bowes Lounge was a decent little backstreet boozer. Guinness was a 3.75/5. We didn’t spent long here as I was itching to get to my favourite Dublin pub. I previously touted this place as the best Guinness in the world…

It was as good as I remembered it! A 5/5 Guinness! I’m honestly torn between Mulligans and Brogans for the award of best Guinness. I think Mulligans just edges it, but it’s mighty close.

What a city to drink in! I wish more places in The UK served Guinness to this high standard. Thanks for reading!

Supermarket Weep - Lidl

It’s been a while, but Supermarket Weep is back! The series where myself and some ‘lucky’ guests, try supermarket own brand beer and beers brewed specifically for supermarkets. In previous episodes we all went wild in the aisles of Tesco and Aldi. Welcome to Supermarket Weep - Lidl.  A piece of advice for you, don’t trust the terrible cupboard holders that these beers come in. I opted to go without a bag or a trolley and regretted that decision.  The beers all fell out of the cupboard and onto the floor. I stuffed my pockets with some of the beers, which caused my shorts to fall down. A new low for me is accidentally exposing myself in a Lidl… Trolley to the rescue! Ignore than BrewDog, that was for something else!  For this episode I was joined by friends of the blog, Dan and John. We kicked things off with Excelsior Lager, a French inspired beer. This was bad, like really bad. It’s a really watery beer, with a weird sweet taste. Awful.  Next up was San Marti...

2024 In Review & The Beer Moose Awards!

“Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time” sang Pink Floyd in 1973. They’re sort of right, each year feels shorter than the last. In fact, it does not feel like a year since I was last writing a blog like this one. Contary to what Pink Floyd said, I found time to do quite a lot in 2024! I rode a new personal best 211 rollercoasters! 2024 will remembered as a bit of a rollercoaster (sorry). Great heights and moments balanced by a devastating loss and a rather poor Cambridge United team. This blog is aiming to be a review of my year, with some awards thrown in! Let’s get into it!  January:  January started with an FA Cup tie, away to Blackburn. I decided that Blackburn was sort of near Liverpool, so like all good away days we made it into a pub weekend.  It was an absolute goal fest! Sadly, like most goal fests The U’s are involved with, it ended with United on the losing side. 5-2 Blackburn.  Golden bird I liked Liverpool, it’s a smart and nic...

Phantasialand - My Happy Place

Using the phrase happy place makes me feel a bit cringe, but I don’t really know how else to describe how much I love Phantasialand. If I close my eyes and think about where I’d most like to be in the world Phantasialand and The Abbey come straight to mind, and I know which one I’d have more fun in at the moment! Ever since my first visit back in 2016 I’ve been in love with Phantasialand and it was time to return after a two year absence. I couldn’t wait for two full days at Phantasialand! We pick this up following Moose On The Loose In Cologne ( Link! ) in snowy Brühl, around 20km south of Cologne. The sight of Brühl Schloss greets you as you exit the train station: UNESCO tick! The next morning we made the walk from the hotel to the park, just before this walk I was convinced to join Strava!  We arrived just before opening and received a golden welcome: The Berlin area Dragon Phantasialand has six dragons and now you’ve seen one of them! You may see more dragons later, but only i...
