Ein Prosit! Ranking The 2024 Oktoberfest Beers!

I love Oktoberfest, it’s the event I look forward to making the pilgrimage to Munich for each year! I adore sitting in the tents or the beer gardens, sipping from a Maß and listening to the music. In this blog I’m going to talk and rank the six Oktoberfest beers and let you know where I drank them! Los Geht’s!

6th Place: Spaten

In last place is Spaten. I only had one of these during my trip. Last year Spaten was one of my favourites, sadly it wasn’t as good this year. We sat in the garden of Festhalle Schottenhamel, which is the tent where the first Oktoberfest beer is tapped by the Mayor of Munich! I was bitterly disappointed by the beer. It had the classic dry, malt taste but also tasted gassy. The fact it tasted gassy is what puts this beer in last place for me. A shame but someone has to finish last.

5th Place: Hofbräu

Last year Hofbräu was my second favourite, but sadly it’s lower down this year. Hofbräu’s effort this year isn’t bad at all. It’s got the classic Oktoberfest beer taste of being crisp and bitter with some underlying sweetness. I only tasted this beer once, of course in the Hofbräu Festzelt! A large tent that anyone who has visited the Hofbräuhaus will recognise the interior of! Overall a solid effort, that’s just edged by the other breweries.

4th Place: Paulaner

Paulaner was my least favourite last year, so I was surprised at how much I rated it this year! It was also my most drank beer at this year’s festival! I had two in Paulaner Festzelt, I was aiming to only have one but some kind people on our table treated me to a beer! It was fresh, bitter and tasty! However what cemented its position for me, was when I drank in Heinz Wurst. Heinz Wurst is a small to medium sized tent.

I was blown away by the freshness of the beer here! It was crisp but with a smooth, caramel aftertaste. Great work Paulaner! A welcomed rise in the rankings from last year!

3rd Place: Löwenbräu

Congrats to Löwenbräu for your bronze medal! I tasted this beer in the Löwenbräu Festzelt and Schützen Festzelt and I was super impressed both times! Out of the six beers this year, Löwenbräu brewed the most refreshing and also the sweetest beer of the festival this year! A truly awesome effort!

2nd Place: Augustiner

Silver medal goes to my favourite German brewery! Brewer of the joint strongest Oktoberfest beer this year! Despite 6.3% ABV only being a slight increase from the other beers, the Augustiner beer tastes noticeably stronger. I love the punchy, strong and bitter taste! It was only just pipped to top spot! I enjoyed this beer in Augustiner Festhalle, we headed straight there upon arriving to the festival!

1st Place and Beermoose’s Beer Of Oktoberfest 2024: Hacker-Pschorr!

I made two visits to Pschorr Bräurosl just for this beer! I was having such a good time that I even tried to dance to 99 Luftballons:

Hacker-Pschorr’s effort this year is simply delicious! It has all of the best elements of the other top beers and therefore is the perfect Oktoberfest beer! A strong malty and bitter taste, but with refined sweetness. I long to have another one! Hack-Pschorr was also my favourite last year, seems they’re very consistent!

Thanks for reading! I’d love to know which is your favourite this year!

Supermarket Weep - Lidl

It’s been a while, but Supermarket Weep is back! The series where myself and some ‘lucky’ guests, try supermarket own brand beer and beers brewed specifically for supermarkets. In previous episodes we all went wild in the aisles of Tesco and Aldi. Welcome to Supermarket Weep - Lidl.  A piece of advice for you, don’t trust the terrible cupboard holders that these beers come in. I opted to go without a bag or a trolley and regretted that decision.  The beers all fell out of the cupboard and onto the floor. I stuffed my pockets with some of the beers, which caused my shorts to fall down. A new low for me is accidentally exposing myself in a Lidl… Trolley to the rescue! Ignore than BrewDog, that was for something else!  For this episode I was joined by friends of the blog, Dan and John. We kicked things off with Excelsior Lager, a French inspired beer. This was bad, like really bad. It’s a really watery beer, with a weird sweet taste. Awful.  Next up was San Marti...

2024 In Review & The Beer Moose Awards!

“Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time” sang Pink Floyd in 1973. They’re sort of right, each year feels shorter than the last. In fact, it does not feel like a year since I was last writing a blog like this one. Contary to what Pink Floyd said, I found time to do quite a lot in 2024! I rode a new personal best 211 rollercoasters! 2024 will remembered as a bit of a rollercoaster (sorry). Great heights and moments balanced by a devastating loss and a rather poor Cambridge United team. This blog is aiming to be a review of my year, with some awards thrown in! Let’s get into it!  January:  January started with an FA Cup tie, away to Blackburn. I decided that Blackburn was sort of near Liverpool, so like all good away days we made it into a pub weekend.  It was an absolute goal fest! Sadly, like most goal fests The U’s are involved with, it ended with United on the losing side. 5-2 Blackburn.  Golden bird I liked Liverpool, it’s a smart and nic...

Phantasialand - My Happy Place

Using the phrase happy place makes me feel a bit cringe, but I don’t really know how else to describe how much I love Phantasialand. If I close my eyes and think about where I’d most like to be in the world Phantasialand and The Abbey come straight to mind, and I know which one I’d have more fun in at the moment! Ever since my first visit back in 2016 I’ve been in love with Phantasialand and it was time to return after a two year absence. I couldn’t wait for two full days at Phantasialand! We pick this up following Moose On The Loose In Cologne ( Link! ) in snowy Brühl, around 20km south of Cologne. The sight of Brühl Schloss greets you as you exit the train station: UNESCO tick! The next morning we made the walk from the hotel to the park, just before this walk I was convinced to join Strava!  We arrived just before opening and received a golden welcome: The Berlin area Dragon Phantasialand has six dragons and now you’ve seen one of them! You may see more dragons later, but only i...
