Away Days 24/25: I Was There When Brophy Scored (Again!) - Woking FA Cup 1st Round!

The FA Cup is back! Cambridge’s kicked their campaign off with a first round tie away to Woking. It was a first visit to Woking since a 3-0 league win back in the 2013/14 promotion season. I have fond memories of that game! Woking’s ground is the only ground I’ve seen Cambridge win at multiple times!

Despite Klopp, Guardiola and Arteta’s best efforts, The FA Cup remains a favourite amongst real football fans. I could rant for days about the disgraceful decision to scrap replays… But let’s not do that right now.

Arriving in Woking, we headed to find a beer.

En route we walked past a Woking ultras pub and made the wise decision not to venture in. A local in the Crown and Anchor told us that we chose wisely.

The Guinness was very decent!

We then headed to the ground.

2013/2014

2024/25
I think it’s fair to say that Woking were not prepared for so many Cambridge fans. 650ish advanced ticket sold and a total of 720ish in the away end on the day. Food options were limited almost exclusively to hot dogs, which had sold out before kick off. A mad scramble to find more for half time began. Really, they should have got a burger fan in. But not the same burger van that sold me some pathetic cheesy chips ten years ago.

Fairly bland hot dog, badly constructed too.

It was a fairly dull and uneventful game. Woking battled hard and made the match rather scrappy. Cult hero James Brophy finally scored his second goal for the club, which settled the game. After months of fans chanting they would enter the pitch if he scored, there was no such reaction.

I’ve seen both Brophy goals in person, have you?

 Cambridge game: 537

Supermarket Weep - Lidl

It’s been a while, but Supermarket Weep is back! The series where myself and some ‘lucky’ guests, try supermarket own brand beer and beers brewed specifically for supermarkets. In previous episodes we all went wild in the aisles of Tesco and Aldi. Welcome to Supermarket Weep - Lidl.  A piece of advice for you, don’t trust the terrible cupboard holders that these beers come in. I opted to go without a bag or a trolley and regretted that decision.  The beers all fell out of the cupboard and onto the floor. I stuffed my pockets with some of the beers, which caused my shorts to fall down. A new low for me is accidentally exposing myself in a Lidl… Trolley to the rescue! Ignore than BrewDog, that was for something else!  For this episode I was joined by friends of the blog, Dan and John. We kicked things off with Excelsior Lager, a French inspired beer. This was bad, like really bad. It’s a really watery beer, with a weird sweet taste. Awful.  Next up was San Marti...

Phantasialand - My Happy Place

Using the phrase happy place makes me feel a bit cringe, but I don’t really know how else to describe how much I love Phantasialand. If I close my eyes and think about where I’d most like to be in the world Phantasialand and The Abbey come straight to mind, and I know which one I’d have more fun in at the moment! Ever since my first visit back in 2016 I’ve been in love with Phantasialand and it was time to return after a two year absence. I couldn’t wait for two full days at Phantasialand! We pick this up following Moose On The Loose In Cologne ( Link! ) in snowy Brühl, around 20km south of Cologne. The sight of Brühl Schloss greets you as you exit the train station: UNESCO tick! The next morning we made the walk from the hotel to the park, just before this walk I was convinced to join Strava!  We arrived just before opening and received a golden welcome: The Berlin area Dragon Phantasialand has six dragons and now you’ve seen one of them! You may see more dragons later, but only i...

Moose On The Loose: Have I Found The Best Ever Crisp Flavour? Manchester.

Join me for another pub trip around Manchester! We will swing by some old favourites and potentially make some new ones! Really this is part one of the three part series, but part two is already released so let’s get to it! I headed straight for Track as soon as I made it off of the train at Manchester Piccadilly. Track is one of my all time favourite taprooms! I opted for the Aspern and Navigator. Aspern is a Vienna style lager and was really nice. Navigator is an Irish Dry style stout and whilst it was ok, I found it a bit sweet for my taste. Beers dispatched it was time for a trip round the corner to another old favourite!  Sureshot is another brilliant taproom! What Did I Say Roy? A west coast pale that really hit the dream spot of lingering bitterness and refreshment. We didn’t have far to go for the next pint!  Balance Taproom is almost next door to Sureshot! Balance specialise in fruited beers which aren’t really my thing, so I had a lager from Utopian Brewing. Ra...
