Welcome to the Sunday Session, a relaxed Sunday pub walk. I’d spent the weekend in Bedford with Dan and John. John hadn’t been to some of the places on Bedford high street before, with most being close together and the weather being so bad, we decided they were the places to go!
After a Harvester breakfast, which was actually not that bad, we walked towards The Wellington, which isn’t on the high street.
The Wellington has easily the best cask selection in Bedford. Pints of Heart Of Darkness and Broadside went down a treat. Next we headed to the high street to visit a sort of new venue.Bedford used to have a Brewhouse and Kitchen, which for quite a while was decent. However bad management led to its closure. From the ashes rises High Street Tap Social. Annoyingly, I didn’t take a photo here. It’s a no thrills, drinks only pub. Large inside, with screens advertising drink deals and reminding people not to do coke in the toilets. A pint of ale, pint of Guinness and a juice came to less than £9! The Guinness was decent and apparently the ale wasn’t bad either. The pub is a good sports pub, with screens everywhere you look. From here we crossed the road and headed inside The Bear.
The Bear is a Bedford classic! A rock and metal pub with good Guinness, what’s not to like!
We go in and are greeted by the bar person, who frankly loves the sound of her own voice. ‘Talking’ to us like a foghorn, she attempted to pour a Guinness and it is served so badly I reject it. There’s no head at all, so it looks like a coke. In a fluster she goes for round 2. It was clear that this bar person has no idea how to pour a Guinness. Round 2 is marginally better in appearance, except the glass which is dirty. It tastes awful. It’s acidic and tastes like it’s been sat in the line for weeks. Stale is a good word to use to describe this place. Moving on to the better things.
We were aiming for The Standard, but it’s closed, so we go to The Rose.
Guinness here was good and we got a seat to watch the rugby! I gave up trying to explain rugby to my friends, so I ordered some of these beauties instead.
I don’t like Christmas, but I can get behind Christmas food! Our next stop was The Kings Arms.
Another good Guinness and another chance to see some of the rugby!
We ended our Sunday Session at what I think is Bedford’s best pub, The Devonshire Arms.
Best pub and the best Guinness in Bedford! You can’t visit Bedford without visiting the Devy!
I never did this:
Thanks for reading!
