Moose On The Loose In York 2024 - Part 2: Shine On You Crazy Phoenix

Welcome to the second part of my 2024 York adventure! We pick things back up, just as I embark on a long walk around the York City Walls.

The Walls are my favourite thing about York (other than the pubs). Walking on them is best enjoyed early morning, when they’re tranquil and you can stop to see the sights without being trampled by tourists.

There’s even a coffee shop within the walls, there’s so much to love about the walls! That’s enough about walls though! Let’s get back to pubs!

The Rose & Crown is a great pub, the food is incredible! I had a steak and Guinness pie with blue cheese!

Look at those chips!

Beer wise:

I went for the Winter Warmth and it was everything I wanted and more.

The Waggon & Horses is pretty much next door, and it had Plum Porter on!

It was a perfect pint and I could have stayed drinking it all night, but there were more pubs to visit! Round the corner and through the archway is The Phoenix:

This is one of the best pubs in York. Every time I visited there’s an interesting dark beer on tap, and this visit was no exception.

Easily beer of the day and I think also beer of the whole trip! Very coffee, very caramel and very toffee! I loved it and had to have more than one!

We sat in the back room, where there was live music:

I’ve never heard someone play the piano so well, I was genuinely impressed! He took requests and played some Pink Floyd. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Phoenix?!).

It was then time for the last pub of this visit. On my last visit, I proclaimed that The Slip Inn was the second best pub in York. Sadly on this visit it was a bit of a let down. We should have stayed at The Phoenix.

The Ruby Mild wasn’t in great condition, nothing close to The Ackhorne. I wanted my final pint to be a good one, so I braved a Guinness.

It wasn’t great.

It was still a great trip, despite the disappointing ending. Plenty of excellent pints and great walks. Can’t ask for more than that!

Thanks for reading.

Supermarket Weep - Lidl

It’s been a while, but Supermarket Weep is back! The series where myself and some ‘lucky’ guests, try supermarket own brand beer and beers brewed specifically for supermarkets. In previous episodes we all went wild in the aisles of Tesco and Aldi. Welcome to Supermarket Weep - Lidl.  A piece of advice for you, don’t trust the terrible cupboard holders that these beers come in. I opted to go without a bag or a trolley and regretted that decision.  The beers all fell out of the cupboard and onto the floor. I stuffed my pockets with some of the beers, which caused my shorts to fall down. A new low for me is accidentally exposing myself in a Lidl… Trolley to the rescue! Ignore than BrewDog, that was for something else!  For this episode I was joined by friends of the blog, Dan and John. We kicked things off with Excelsior Lager, a French inspired beer. This was bad, like really bad. It’s a really watery beer, with a weird sweet taste. Awful.  Next up was San Marti...

Phantasialand - My Happy Place

Using the phrase happy place makes me feel a bit cringe, but I don’t really know how else to describe how much I love Phantasialand. If I close my eyes and think about where I’d most like to be in the world Phantasialand and The Abbey come straight to mind, and I know which one I’d have more fun in at the moment! Ever since my first visit back in 2016 I’ve been in love with Phantasialand and it was time to return after a two year absence. I couldn’t wait for two full days at Phantasialand! We pick this up following Moose On The Loose In Cologne ( Link! ) in snowy Brühl, around 20km south of Cologne. The sight of Brühl Schloss greets you as you exit the train station: UNESCO tick! The next morning we made the walk from the hotel to the park, just before this walk I was convinced to join Strava!  We arrived just before opening and received a golden welcome: The Berlin area Dragon Phantasialand has six dragons and now you’ve seen one of them! You may see more dragons later, but only i...

Moose On The Loose: Have I Found The Best Ever Crisp Flavour? Manchester.

Join me for another pub trip around Manchester! We will swing by some old favourites and potentially make some new ones! Really this is part one of the three part series, but part two is already released so let’s get to it! I headed straight for Track as soon as I made it off of the train at Manchester Piccadilly. Track is one of my all time favourite taprooms! I opted for the Aspern and Navigator. Aspern is a Vienna style lager and was really nice. Navigator is an Irish Dry style stout and whilst it was ok, I found it a bit sweet for my taste. Beers dispatched it was time for a trip round the corner to another old favourite!  Sureshot is another brilliant taproom! What Did I Say Roy? A west coast pale that really hit the dream spot of lingering bitterness and refreshment. We didn’t have far to go for the next pint!  Balance Taproom is almost next door to Sureshot! Balance specialise in fruited beers which aren’t really my thing, so I had a lager from Utopian Brewing. Ra...
