Away Days 24/25: A Long Overdue Away Win (For Me) - Huddersfield

Survival in League 1 was still hanging the balance, Cambridge could be relegated by the end of their game at Huddersfield. The U’s made the trip up to West Yorkshire knowing that they had to win. 

We set off at around 9am and stopped at Blyth Services, which is far from a favourite of mine! The queue for Greggs stretched virtually all the way back to Cambridge, so an early Burger King happened. 

Tasted better than it looked

We arrived in Huddersfield in plenty of time prior to kick off. The stadium is called The John Smith’s Stadium and therefore I felt having a pint of John Smith’s would be the appropriate pre match pint. Sadly John Smith’s is only available in cans! This must be the first time that someone has been disappointed to not see John Smith’s on draught.

Bland beer dispatched, we headed to our seats.


It’s actually really nice stadium, which is something that cannot be said about all former or even current Premier League grounds! 

Elias Kachunga received a warm reception all afternoon

The first half went slightly to Huddersfield’s favour, with a couple of chances not taken. Then on 69 minutes something amazing happened, cometh the hour cometh the man, James Brophy curls in a beauty to give The U’s the lead! Rapture in the away end!

The silky ginger is just what we need!

With time running out it really feels like it’s going to be our day, but on 89 minutes disaster strikes. The U’s fail to deal with a corner and Huddersfield equalise. From this point you have to say that the home side seemed more likely to use their momentum and take all three points. However, the plucky U’s have other ideas as Brophy plays the ball across to Sully KaiKai to fire home in 90+2! It’s been a long, long time since I have experience a Cambridge away end bouncing so much! 

My last away league win was against Carlisle on 17th February 2024, which is 427 days ago at time of writing! It was also the first ever league away win I’ve witnessed with friend of the blog DJ!

I don’t know if this away win will have any impact on our bid for survival, but what I can say is that these are the moments you live for as a football fan! You simply cannot beat at last minute winner! Leaving a ground in a joyful mood was a welcomed feeling! 

The journey back to Cambridge was joyous despite stopping at Blyth again! We weren’t the only ones to stop at Blyth though!

2024 In Review & The Beer Moose Awards!

  “Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time” sang Pink Floyd in 1973. They’re sort of right, each year feels shorter than the last. In fact, it does not feel like a year since I was last writing a blog like this one. Contary to what Pink Floyd said, I found time to do quite a lot in 2024! Moose On The Loose - Lincoln: Imping Over The Line

  I was excited to visit Lincoln properly for the first time. Last year I visited just to watch the football and only managed to get to one pub. Therefore a proper visit was long overdue. I was joined by a full squad of friends and here’s what we got up to. An early start at Cambridge station saw us arrive before eleven in Lincoln. Every train we rode arrived on time, what a miracle! After checking into the hotel we made our way to The Golden Eagle, probably the best football away pub I’ve ever visited!  Pints of Castle Rock beers, including Harvest Pale and How High Is The Moon, were consumed as excitement for the game started to build. Last season Cambridge were hammered 6-0 by Lincoln, as we walked to the ground I hopped history was not going to repeat itself.
