Moose On The Loose In New York Again!

I was lucky enough to spend a few days in New York. Last year you may remember that I rushed round the city in one day! This blog will feature the various beer places I visited and what I drank, I’ll tell you my fave at the end!

High Bar New York:

I’m cheating a bit with this one as it it’s a roof bar at the hotel I stayed at! But look at the views:

Two beer bottles

Better at night right?

The bar had a decent offering with beers from Dogfish and a strange Guinness in a bottle I’d never had before!

Lillie’s Time Square:

We found this place by chance, sometimes you just happen to wonder past a gem. This place had gone all out for Halloween!

Spooky

Halloween starts earlier every year

Perhaps the scariest view of them all!

Mermaid IPA from local brewery Coney Island went down a treat! I also tried the house lager which was wet and cold.

Tavern on The Green:

A pub in the middle (sort of) of Central Park! Does London have anything like this?

It was fancy!

Fancy is just another way to say expensive! The Das Bronx Oktoberfest from Bronx Brewery was decent though.

Beer Authority NYC:

 Busy street!

This place is on the same street as the hotel, which was very convenient! I made a couple of visits here throughout my visit. There was a large range of beers covering all styles. Highlights were Nightshine Black Lager from Catskill and Save The Robots by Radiant Pig.

Yard House New York - Times Square:

More Bronx Brewery!

A huge bar!

This place is enormous and so is the beer range! I enjoyed a Bronx American Pale here.

The Three Monkeys:

It was hard to take a photo of…

I can’t wait to type the name of this beer out..

The Three Monkeys felt and looked like more of a ‘pub’ than anywhere else in NY. Really strong selection of beers and I really enjoyed my Inexplicable Use Of Umlaut (see that was fun to type).

Craft + Carry - Hell’s Kitchen:

Who’s the photo bomber?

Spooky

Another flight

Before you ask, Hell’s Kitchen is the name of the area and not some tribute to that sweaty chef bloke. This place was decent though. Nice venue with a large selection of both draught, bottles and cans. To be honest there wasn’t really anything on my flight that I’d rate above good but I also treated myself to some cans which are currently in my fridge.

Beer Culture:

Dark and spooky

This was the last venue of a long night and I fancied a stout. Black Gold by Rockaway was really nice!

Joyce Public House:
Menu in the photo so I could tell the location, how smart am I?

This place was round the corner from the hotel and advertised itself as an Irish pub, it did have rugby shirts on the walls. Dales Pale from Oskar Blues was crisp and refreshing!

The Keg Room:

I really liked this place. It was fun busy and had a good range of beers. I started on the Mosaic and Amarillo IPA by Broken Bow which was of the beers of the trip. I then tried the beer pictured below.

The above is American Light by Samuel Adams. Light beers have always intrigued me as I’m not really sure what or who they’re for. At 4.2% it’s a lower ABV than most on the bar but it’s not exactly low. Unlike most light beers this one did actually taste of something. Wouldn’t have it again though.

This is Black Duck Porter and it wasn’t very good.

District Tap House:

I remember not liking the atmosphere at this place. Beers from Twin Folk and Alternate Ending drank well though.

Torch & Crown Brewing Company:

What’s the best thing to do when someone wants to look round a huge book shop? Leave and grab a beer? That’s the correct answer and happily Torch & Crown Brewing Company was right around the corner. Based in a building that is sort of outside yet inside at the same time and serving beers such as Cheat Code and Almost Famous a good decision was made. Cheat Code, a west coat style IPA was a real stand out of the trip.

Cheat Code

Old Town Bar:

Doesn’t look very old from the outside..

Looks can be deceiving

A proper old school bar the aptly named Old Town Bar was quite the experience, in a good way of course. Local beers served from both tap and can made up a very decent line up. However there was a strange feature of the place:

The ancient toilets were interesting to see. The cubicles has curtains at the bottom of the door, I guess if you see that curtain dancing in the wind you shouldn’t go in there next.

Now we reach my fave bar in New York!
Valhalla:

I honestly adored this place. Valhalla is the bar that we all dream about living near. The kind of place you spent an hour in or a whole evening. After being welcomed by the friendly bar staff you’ll find a range a beers to choose from, I managed to sample 15 different beers across my two visits! From wheat beers to amber beers, lagers and even a radler!

Don’t worry I sampled most in flight form

As you can see I love a flight!

New York is obviously a huge city and there’s so many bars to experience but I was so impressed with where I visited around The Hell’s Kitchen area of the city. I’d go as far as to say that it’s an incredible city of beer. Maybe one I’ll return,

Thanks for reading!

Supermarket Weep - Lidl

It’s been a while, but Supermarket Weep is back! The series where myself and some ‘lucky’ guests, try supermarket own brand beer and beers brewed specifically for supermarkets. In previous episodes we all went wild in the aisles of Tesco and Aldi. Welcome to Supermarket Weep - Lidl.  A piece of advice for you, don’t trust the terrible cupboard holders that these beers come in. I opted to go without a bag or a trolley and regretted that decision.  The beers all fell out of the cupboard and onto the floor. I stuffed my pockets with some of the beers, which caused my shorts to fall down. A new low for me is accidentally exposing myself in a Lidl… Trolley to the rescue! Ignore than BrewDog, that was for something else!  For this episode I was joined by friends of the blog, Dan and John. We kicked things off with Excelsior Lager, a French inspired beer. This was bad, like really bad. It’s a really watery beer, with a weird sweet taste. Awful.  Next up was San Marti...

Phantasialand - My Happy Place

Using the phrase happy place makes me feel a bit cringe, but I don’t really know how else to describe how much I love Phantasialand. If I close my eyes and think about where I’d most like to be in the world Phantasialand and The Abbey come straight to mind, and I know which one I’d have more fun in at the moment! Ever since my first visit back in 2016 I’ve been in love with Phantasialand and it was time to return after a two year absence. I couldn’t wait for two full days at Phantasialand! We pick this up following Moose On The Loose In Cologne ( Link! ) in snowy Brühl, around 20km south of Cologne. The sight of Brühl Schloss greets you as you exit the train station: UNESCO tick! The next morning we made the walk from the hotel to the park, just before this walk I was convinced to join Strava!  We arrived just before opening and received a golden welcome: The Berlin area Dragon Phantasialand has six dragons and now you’ve seen one of them! You may see more dragons later, but only i...

Moose On The Loose: Have I Found The Best Ever Crisp Flavour? Manchester.

Join me for another pub trip around Manchester! We will swing by some old favourites and potentially make some new ones! Really this is part one of the three part series, but part two is already released so let’s get to it! I headed straight for Track as soon as I made it off of the train at Manchester Piccadilly. Track is one of my all time favourite taprooms! I opted for the Aspern and Navigator. Aspern is a Vienna style lager and was really nice. Navigator is an Irish Dry style stout and whilst it was ok, I found it a bit sweet for my taste. Beers dispatched it was time for a trip round the corner to another old favourite!  Sureshot is another brilliant taproom! What Did I Say Roy? A west coast pale that really hit the dream spot of lingering bitterness and refreshment. We didn’t have far to go for the next pint!  Balance Taproom is almost next door to Sureshot! Balance specialise in fruited beers which aren’t really my thing, so I had a lager from Utopian Brewing. Ra...
