Away Days 25/26: At A Football Ground Far Far Away - Barrow

At the time of writing Cambridge United have the best home form in the league! However their away form doesn’t match up with just one away win all season. So making the longest trip of the season up to Barrow in Furness would of course bring great success right? It’s only 260 miles from St Ives (Cambridgeshire).

Such a journey required an early start, at 06:50 I parked up at Brampton Hut services and waited for the away bus to arrive to take me the rest of the way to Barrow. We made two stops en route before arriving at around 13:40. We decided to check out the fan zone, which is just to the right of this building:
The stadium has a weird name

Beer choices inside were Carling or Madri. I opted for Carling but that died so I had a Madri. The club operated a cup deposit scheme where you pay a two pound deposit for the cup but weirdly then return the cup to the bar to receive a token to then finally get your two pound back at the club shop. The bar is card only and the deposit is refunded in cash for some reason.

The cups aren’t bad

The fan zone itself was well done with both indoor and outdoor areas. I particularly enjoyed the history and information about the club, which included a shout out to form United cult hero Lee McEvilly and also a piece about Barrow suffering relegation at The Abbey back in 2013.

Nice feature

I have to say that everyone at Barrow which I spoke to were very friendly and gave the travelling U’s a warm welcome. Barrow felt like a community focused club and I say that as a credit to them. However their ground did not feel very football league standard. We were housed in what must be a temporary stand with pillars that block parts of the view. Facilities were cramped and I’m told the pies were not great.

The game itself was mostly a slow burner in the first half. Barrow offered very little offensively and the U’s never looked like conceding. A decent finish from Pelly gave the U’s a vital lead at the start of the second half, which left United in a comfortable position. Eastwoood was forced into a good save late on before Pelly grabbed his second of the game to seal a second win on the road this season.

Wonderful sight!

There’s nothing quite like winning away! That’s a feeling not felt too often by U’s fans in recent times.

I parked up back at home at around 23:30 and enjoyed a quick beer before heading to bed.

Cambridge game: 580
44/92

Thanks for reading.

Supermarket Weep - Lidl

It’s been a while, but Supermarket Weep is back! The series where myself and some ‘lucky’ guests, try supermarket own brand beer and beers brewed specifically for supermarkets. In previous episodes we all went wild in the aisles of Tesco and Aldi. Welcome to Supermarket Weep - Lidl.  A piece of advice for you, don’t trust the terrible cupboard holders that these beers come in. I opted to go without a bag or a trolley and regretted that decision.  The beers all fell out of the cupboard and onto the floor. I stuffed my pockets with some of the beers, which caused my shorts to fall down. A new low for me is accidentally exposing myself in a Lidl… Trolley to the rescue! Ignore than BrewDog, that was for something else!  For this episode I was joined by friends of the blog, Dan and John. We kicked things off with Excelsior Lager, a French inspired beer. This was bad, like really bad. It’s a really watery beer, with a weird sweet taste. Awful.  Next up was San Marti...

Phantasialand - My Happy Place

Using the phrase happy place makes me feel a bit cringe, but I don’t really know how else to describe how much I love Phantasialand. If I close my eyes and think about where I’d most like to be in the world Phantasialand and The Abbey come straight to mind, and I know which one I’d have more fun in at the moment! Ever since my first visit back in 2016 I’ve been in love with Phantasialand and it was time to return after a two year absence. I couldn’t wait for two full days at Phantasialand! We pick this up following Moose On The Loose In Cologne ( Link! ) in snowy Brühl, around 20km south of Cologne. The sight of Brühl Schloss greets you as you exit the train station: UNESCO tick! The next morning we made the walk from the hotel to the park, just before this walk I was convinced to join Strava!  We arrived just before opening and received a golden welcome: The Berlin area Dragon Phantasialand has six dragons and now you’ve seen one of them! You may see more dragons later, but only i...

Moose On The Loose: Have I Found The Best Ever Crisp Flavour? Manchester.

Join me for another pub trip around Manchester! We will swing by some old favourites and potentially make some new ones! Really this is part one of the three part series, but part two is already released so let’s get to it! I headed straight for Track as soon as I made it off of the train at Manchester Piccadilly. Track is one of my all time favourite taprooms! I opted for the Aspern and Navigator. Aspern is a Vienna style lager and was really nice. Navigator is an Irish Dry style stout and whilst it was ok, I found it a bit sweet for my taste. Beers dispatched it was time for a trip round the corner to another old favourite!  Sureshot is another brilliant taproom! What Did I Say Roy? A west coast pale that really hit the dream spot of lingering bitterness and refreshment. We didn’t have far to go for the next pint!  Balance Taproom is almost next door to Sureshot! Balance specialise in fruited beers which aren’t really my thing, so I had a lager from Utopian Brewing. Ra...
