Away Days 25/26: Newport Lookin Down - Newport

Newport have never struck me as a football league club and I don’t think they will be one for much longer. Cambridge however are looking like they will be a league one club again, and we made the trip to Wales hoping to avoid another defeat to a bottom of the league club.

Setting off around 08:00 we made our first stop at the rather nice Rugby Services, where a Greggs was much needed!

Nom

Arriving in Newport around 13:20 we went for a walk to find a pint.

? Newport castle?

A local suggested we visited The Potters, which happened to be just round the corner!

A nice sports focused pub with Alpacalypse from Salt on tap, which I enjoyed.

We saw even more sights walking back to the ground.

Screams non league

Through the turnstiles we were presented with the choice of a stand with a roof to the side of the pitch, which felt a bit cramped or a stand behind the goal without a roof. We opted to stand behind the goal in the rain.

Not a bad view

Hardcore fans

After a rather nothing first half, The U’s upped their attacks in the second half which lead to a Liam Bennett back post header!!

Defensively Newport were terrible and things got even worse when their centre back decided to head the ball straight up into the air which should have led to an easy catch for the goal keeper.. in reality it to led to the keeper dropping the ball in front of KaiKai who smartly finished for 2-0! Bouncing in the stand was risky as the floor started to give way.

It would have been great to add a couple more goals to aid our goal difference but of course the most important thing was the three points. I worry for Newport and honestly think that their stay in the football league will be over. A great win for the U’s on road. I’m not sure why some kid ran into the pitch in the second half, felt very random!

The U’s celebrated in front of the away end!

There was time on the way home for a celebratory KFC!

I then ended my day with Vault City’s Mini Eggs beer!

Thanks for reading!

Supermarket Weep - Lidl

It’s been a while, but Supermarket Weep is back! The series where myself and some ‘lucky’ guests, try supermarket own brand beer and beers brewed specifically for supermarkets. In previous episodes we all went wild in the aisles of Tesco and Aldi. Welcome to Supermarket Weep - Lidl.  A piece of advice for you, don’t trust the terrible cupboard holders that these beers come in. I opted to go without a bag or a trolley and regretted that decision.  The beers all fell out of the cupboard and onto the floor. I stuffed my pockets with some of the beers, which caused my shorts to fall down. A new low for me is accidentally exposing myself in a Lidl… Trolley to the rescue! Ignore than BrewDog, that was for something else!  For this episode I was joined by friends of the blog, Dan and John. We kicked things off with Excelsior Lager, a French inspired beer. This was bad, like really bad. It’s a really watery beer, with a weird sweet taste. Awful.  Next up was San Marti...

Phantasialand - My Happy Place

Using the phrase happy place makes me feel a bit cringe, but I don’t really know how else to describe how much I love Phantasialand. If I close my eyes and think about where I’d most like to be in the world Phantasialand and The Abbey come straight to mind, and I know which one I’d have more fun in at the moment! Ever since my first visit back in 2016 I’ve been in love with Phantasialand and it was time to return after a two year absence. I couldn’t wait for two full days at Phantasialand! We pick this up following Moose On The Loose In Cologne ( Link! ) in snowy Brühl, around 20km south of Cologne. The sight of Brühl Schloss greets you as you exit the train station: UNESCO tick! The next morning we made the walk from the hotel to the park, just before this walk I was convinced to join Strava!  We arrived just before opening and received a golden welcome: The Berlin area Dragon Phantasialand has six dragons and now you’ve seen one of them! You may see more dragons later, but only i...

Moose On The Loose: Have I Found The Best Ever Crisp Flavour? Manchester.

Join me for another pub trip around Manchester! We will swing by some old favourites and potentially make some new ones! Really this is part one of the three part series, but part two is already released so let’s get to it! I headed straight for Track as soon as I made it off of the train at Manchester Piccadilly. Track is one of my all time favourite taprooms! I opted for the Aspern and Navigator. Aspern is a Vienna style lager and was really nice. Navigator is an Irish Dry style stout and whilst it was ok, I found it a bit sweet for my taste. Beers dispatched it was time for a trip round the corner to another old favourite!  Sureshot is another brilliant taproom! What Did I Say Roy? A west coast pale that really hit the dream spot of lingering bitterness and refreshment. We didn’t have far to go for the next pint!  Balance Taproom is almost next door to Sureshot! Balance specialise in fruited beers which aren’t really my thing, so I had a lager from Utopian Brewing. Ra...
