Away Days 25/26: A Mega Weekend In Manc, Accrington & Stockport.

Welcome to another blog! This instalment is a combination of an away day and northern beer blog, so there’s a lot to get through!

I travelled up north on the Friday afternoon and met Rach at Sureshot, where we enjoyed some of Sureshot’s 4th birthday beers! From here it would have been rude not to visit Cloudwater and Track too, so we did.

I like Cloudwater beer a lot but there’s something I just don’t love about their taproom and I can’t put my finger on it. No there’s not a Peterborough United clock…

Track however is one of my favourite taprooms. Here I enjoyed the Spezial, Festbier, which was stunning. Festbier is such a difficult style to get right and Track have aced it.

We were getting hungry so made our way to Bundobust on Oxford Road. They had a new menu on which included some Chinese inspired dishes. The food here is excellent but is all veggie and I do miss meat…
I washed the food down with their lager and centennial hopped NEIPA.

Our next stop was old fave which also happens to be one of the best pubs in the country, any guesses?

If you said The City Arms give yourself a pat on the back! We of course had Plum Porter!

Our last stop of the evening was at North Westward Ho.

Always such a good line up here!

I went for All Lies And Jest which is a delicious but possibly not sensible 7% big hitting West Coast IPA!

We pick things up the next morning at Allexpress, a small coffee and breakfast spot near Manchester Victoria.
The best dippy egg I’ve ever had!

We were off to watch Cambridge play at Accrington Stanley by catching the train from Victoria. We found time to pop into the Victoria Tap which I forgot to take any photos of. The Kirkstall Best Yorkshire Bitter was drinking well! We arrived in Accrington and found our way to Arden Inn, a recommendation from BRAPA Simon.

I felt this pub was the epitome of a small northern town pub. A friendly welcome from the staff and locals alike, including a Stanley fan. We sat down on a large table with our Dark Flagon rum porter from Wily Fox and were later joined by some locals who switched on the TV to watch the horse racing!

We then made our way to the ground and I opted for a meat and potato pie and pint deal!
Probably the best meat and potato pie I’ve ever had! Sadly the only pint available was Carling…

The game was a frustrating day at the office. Stanley took the lead and then defended well. Despite Cambridge huffing and puffing we only managed a 1:1 draw, it still could be a good point come the end of the season. On our way to the ground we spotted a good looking micro pub so decided to check it out on our way to the station.

To our horror upon entering The Crafty Fox all the beers were Greene King. Ffs I thought but we decided to give them some custom and I went for an Estrella Gallica to avoid GK.

We then headed back to Stockport via a local Accy chip shop for chips and went to The Magnet.

Easily one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had! Washed down with a BPA from BOA Brewing. We then walked down the road to Runaway Brewery where I had their Dry Irish Stout, a beer I’d highly recommend.

We finished our night at The Crown which I now think is my fave Stockport pub. Beers from Buxton (above) and George Shaw were served in excellent condition.

The next day I headed home and found that I’d have an hour to wait in Peterborough so I decided to check out The Bumble Inn.

I really enjoyed my visit to this brilliant micro pub! The Black Iris Madagascan Porter was one of the beers of the weekend!

Another brilliant weekend away up North. The Stockport beer scene is going from strength to strength and I look forward to being back up there soon! Thanks for reading!

Cambridge game: 597

  1. Great weekend recap! Sounds like a solid football trip across Manchester, Accrington, and Stockport. Nothing better than good matches, good company, and a refreshing New World Pale Ale Beer to wind things down.

Supermarket Weep - Lidl

It’s been a while, but Supermarket Weep is back! The series where myself and some ‘lucky’ guests, try supermarket own brand beer and beers brewed specifically for supermarkets. In previous episodes we all went wild in the aisles of Tesco and Aldi. Welcome to Supermarket Weep - Lidl.  A piece of advice for you, don’t trust the terrible cupboard holders that these beers come in. I opted to go without a bag or a trolley and regretted that decision.  The beers all fell out of the cupboard and onto the floor. I stuffed my pockets with some of the beers, which caused my shorts to fall down. A new low for me is accidentally exposing myself in a Lidl… Trolley to the rescue! Ignore than BrewDog, that was for something else!  For this episode I was joined by friends of the blog, Dan and John. We kicked things off with Excelsior Lager, a French inspired beer. This was bad, like really bad. It’s a really watery beer, with a weird sweet taste. Awful.  Next up was San Marti...

Phantasialand - My Happy Place

Using the phrase happy place makes me feel a bit cringe, but I don’t really know how else to describe how much I love Phantasialand. If I close my eyes and think about where I’d most like to be in the world Phantasialand and The Abbey come straight to mind, and I know which one I’d have more fun in at the moment! Ever since my first visit back in 2016 I’ve been in love with Phantasialand and it was time to return after a two year absence. I couldn’t wait for two full days at Phantasialand! We pick this up following Moose On The Loose In Cologne ( Link! ) in snowy Brühl, around 20km south of Cologne. The sight of Brühl Schloss greets you as you exit the train station: UNESCO tick! The next morning we made the walk from the hotel to the park, just before this walk I was convinced to join Strava!  We arrived just before opening and received a golden welcome: The Berlin area Dragon Phantasialand has six dragons and now you’ve seen one of them! You may see more dragons later, but only i...

Moose On The Loose: Have I Found The Best Ever Crisp Flavour? Manchester.

Join me for another pub trip around Manchester! We will swing by some old favourites and potentially make some new ones! Really this is part one of the three part series, but part two is already released so let’s get to it! I headed straight for Track as soon as I made it off of the train at Manchester Piccadilly. Track is one of my all time favourite taprooms! I opted for the Aspern and Navigator. Aspern is a Vienna style lager and was really nice. Navigator is an Irish Dry style stout and whilst it was ok, I found it a bit sweet for my taste. Beers dispatched it was time for a trip round the corner to another old favourite!  Sureshot is another brilliant taproom! What Did I Say Roy? A west coast pale that really hit the dream spot of lingering bitterness and refreshment. We didn’t have far to go for the next pint!  Balance Taproom is almost next door to Sureshot! Balance specialise in fruited beers which aren’t really my thing, so I had a lager from Utopian Brewing. Ra...
