This (Turning 30) Means Nothing To Me Oooooh Vienna - Part 2 Beer

Hello and welcome to part two of my 30th birthday celebrations in Vienna, in this part I’ll go through where we drank and who knows you might even get some recommendations. Also I know that photo makes it look like I don’t have any arms, which would made drinking beer rather difficult.

We kick things off next to our hotel. Whilst waiting for some of the others to be ready, Nathan and I headed to Weissgerberstube and enjoyed a Puntigamer Panther, a macro Helles.

It was just the job! Crisp and refreshing.

We then walked to Prater and straight into the Schweizerhaus beer garden where we were treated to an excellent pour of Budvar.

Once I’d drank that I noticed a Marzen from Austrian micro brewery Murauer:
Really tasty!

We made it to another beer garden, called Gösser Eck, which featured a good range of beers.

I started with a lovely and slightly chocolatey Dunkel from Wieselburg and followed this up with a Zwickl, obviously I did these the wrong way round! I do love the freshness of an unfiltered lager.

After a short break from beer we headed for dinner at Luftburg where I had Schladminger BioZwickl and a Biostoff Lager:

Both were excellent

We then headed into the centre, starting at Mel’s Craft Beers & Diner. We didn’t have long here but it was an interesting venue. Luckily they did tasting flights as there much to try and not much time to do it in!

Cask cider?!

Highlights from my flight included beers from Vienna brewers Muttermilch and Bevog. Extinction is forever: Swan and Goose was a strong contender for beer of the holiday. 6.9% proper west coast IPA.

John then managed to find us an absolute star. Philosoph was like being in a proper backstreet boozer and we were clearly the only tourists there.

John and I worked through an impressive list of different styles of lagers ranging from Tankbier to Keller pils to dunkles. My pick of what I tried was Kellerpils from Schremser which was some of the freshest and most crisp beer I’ve ever tasted. I highly recommend a visit to this place if you find yourself in Vienna.

After a good night of sleep we found ourselves in a roof top beer garden called Das Beisl, it’s in Prater. Just the one beer on offer here, Wieselburger Spezial. A strong and malty lager.

Big fan of the glass

When I was researching beer places for this trip there was one venue that pretty much everyone reccomended, 1516 Brewing Company. I have to say that it was excellent and all the people who mentioned it were right! Although they don’t do tasting flights you can order all the beers in 100ml servings so you can try loads. 1516 have a deal with USA brewers Victoria to brew their flagship IPA called HopDevil in Vienna! It’s a proper West Coast IPA! Bold and piney flavours for days! My other highlights from 1516 were their single hop series beers, which included a Strata version.

Pretty building

No flight no problem!

The next place we visited was Ammutson, which I didn’t take any photos of. We didn’t have a good time here. The place was empty but the staff member kept trying to seat a group of six at four person tables, which unless we removed some limbs wasn’t going to work. I thought the beers were very expensive, staff unhelpful and service painfully slow. I won’t be rushing back.

Onto to happier things.

Another pretty building

Nerd shot!

7 Stern Bräu was excellent and a complete contrast to the previous venue. Great food and beer was consumed plentifully!

My pick of their beers was the Marzen, it was a brilliant example of one of my favourite styles. I highly recommend a visit here!

Our last stop of the night was at Stadtboden Wiener Bierkultur, a really nice bar. Here I enjoyed Mountain Pale from Bierol and it was one of the beers of holiday.

I don’t think I actually managed to get my drink in the photo….

Time in Vienna flew and on our last day we had one last beer. Fittingly I finished by drinking a beer from a brewery that I started with (after the Budvar), Murauer. Their pils was lovely and crisp with a slight bitterness. A good end to a brilliant trip.

Despite the conflicting information I can confirm it wasn’t a budvar.

There we have it, that is everywhere I drank in Vienna. It wasn’t really a beer focused trip as I was more there to to ride the coasters, however we found some great spots and beers. Thanks for reading!

Supermarket Weep - Lidl

It’s been a while, but Supermarket Weep is back! The series where myself and some ‘lucky’ guests, try supermarket own brand beer and beers brewed specifically for supermarkets. In previous episodes we all went wild in the aisles of Tesco and Aldi. Welcome to Supermarket Weep - Lidl.  A piece of advice for you, don’t trust the terrible cupboard holders that these beers come in. I opted to go without a bag or a trolley and regretted that decision.  The beers all fell out of the cupboard and onto the floor. I stuffed my pockets with some of the beers, which caused my shorts to fall down. A new low for me is accidentally exposing myself in a Lidl… Trolley to the rescue! Ignore than BrewDog, that was for something else!  For this episode I was joined by friends of the blog, Dan and John. We kicked things off with Excelsior Lager, a French inspired beer. This was bad, like really bad. It’s a really watery beer, with a weird sweet taste. Awful.  Next up was San Marti...

Phantasialand - My Happy Place

Using the phrase happy place makes me feel a bit cringe, but I don’t really know how else to describe how much I love Phantasialand. If I close my eyes and think about where I’d most like to be in the world Phantasialand and The Abbey come straight to mind, and I know which one I’d have more fun in at the moment! Ever since my first visit back in 2016 I’ve been in love with Phantasialand and it was time to return after a two year absence. I couldn’t wait for two full days at Phantasialand! We pick this up following Moose On The Loose In Cologne ( Link! ) in snowy Brühl, around 20km south of Cologne. The sight of Brühl Schloss greets you as you exit the train station: UNESCO tick! The next morning we made the walk from the hotel to the park, just before this walk I was convinced to join Strava!  We arrived just before opening and received a golden welcome: The Berlin area Dragon Phantasialand has six dragons and now you’ve seen one of them! You may see more dragons later, but only i...

Away Days 25/26: Promotion Party? - Crewe

How time flies. It only feels like yesterday I was writing the blog for the first away day of the season at Swindon and now I’m writing about the last away day! Going into the final weekend of the season Cambridge were in third place, the last automatic promotion spot. There were 27 possible scenarios that could have occurred and in those Cambridge would be promoted in 19 of them. This is my take on Cambridge United’s winner takes all last game of the season, I hope you enjoy it.  The day before. I made my way up to Stockport where I met Rach, Liz and John. We tried a few beers to settle the nerves. I was already nervous and was changing my mind about whether we were going to win promotion or not. Me and Rach had a beer in a Robinsons pub but I forgot to take any photos there so we start at Thread. John made a mess From Thread we walked about 50 feet to Produce Hall to get some food.  The garlic chilli chicken was delicious! From here we headed to Fell. Quite a lot of be...
