Away days are back! Cambridge kicked off their away campaign at Bromley, somewhere we had been just a few months prior at the tail end of the previous season. A tough, physical and yet winnable game awaited us just outside of the capital.
I met up with John and DJ at Kings Cross and we headed straight to London Victoria via the Victoria line. Here we had lunch and some pints at The Willow Walk, which I initially thought was a new spoons tick for me! Turns out I’d been there before.

A pint of Oakham Sun City and a curry was just the job
We spoke to some fellow U’s fans before heading to Bromley and there was excitement amongst the fan base. Bromley’s stadium is a short walk from Bromley South station but you must get there early. Bromley have learned nothing from last season and the whole operation is chaotic and slow. We always aim to arrive at grounds in good time but several fans missed kick off due to queues to get in. This was apparently caused by faulty ticket scanners. Being near London you are thoroughly searched before entering the stadium. I was told that some food items ran out very early on, and other reason we opted to eat in spoons pre match!
I went for the First Drop (totally because it shares it name with the European Coaster Club’s magazine) and it was very nice! It was great to see some actually good beer options at a football stadium! The atmosphere in the away end was brilliant all day with around 800 U’s in attendance!
A real game of two halves with Cambridge dominating the first half, sadly with nothing to show for it.
Around twenty minutes from time KaiKai launched an outrageous ball forward for Knight to latch onto and the U’s number ten finished well to send the away end into raptures!
With their physicality Bromley always pose a threat and they got themselves back into the game with a former Cambridge forward finishing well after the U’s failed to fully clear a set piece. 1-1 it finished and that’s a fair result and a good away point. Bromley have an excellent home record and are so tough to play against.
Our post game plan was to go and do some of the Bermondsey beer mile but the aim was to start from the opposite end to where we normally start. The phrase fail to prepare, prepare to fail now comes to mind as I neglected to plan anything. So when I found out Fourpure had closed things did not get off to the best start. Our luck continued as the next stop, Small Beer, had closed at 18:00. We ventured on towards Battersea Brewery who had also closed their Bermondsey tap, though this closure looks more permanent. So therefore our first stop was The Kernel, which was quite a hike from Bermondsey South Station!

I started with the Hopfenweisse Idaho 7 which was a tasty wheat beer with a nice hopped finish.
My pick of the beers was this Mosaic hopped Export Porter!

Beer of the day!
We then walked to Enid Street Tavern.
Not my favourite tap on the mile as I think some of the selection is a bit dull, for example the Enid Street Tavern Lager I had was fine but is fine really good enough when the quality of some of the other beers available on the beer mile is so high? I also had The Deya Nelson Pils which was very tasty!
Our next stop was 73 Enid Street aka Cloudwater!
I didn’t take any photos so here’s one from last time out:
Here I went very German and really enjoyed both the Luftweizen wheat beer and Smoked Marzen!
Our last stop of thr night was Klementino’s Pizza as we were super hungry! The place was packed and we waited just short of the suggested 30 min wait but it was worth it! My pizza with broccoli was amazing! Beer available was Jopen Pils from Jopen.
We have started strong with our first away day of the season! I love going round the Bermondsey taps but it always feels like time flies and you don’t get around as many as you’d like! If Cambridge had got all three points it could well have been a perfect day! It’s a shame that so many of the beer mile taps have closed but I’m glad that there are more food options now. I must remember to always start where I normally start and not try to be clever and reverse the route!
Thanks for reading!
