Oktoberfest 2025! My Favourite Event Of The Year!

When I tell people that I’m going to Oktoberfest they normally say “is that the one in Ipswich?”, or “my local is doing one of them”. It seems that there’s so many ‘Oktoberfest’ events that people forget or don’t realise what happens in Munich each year. To me, what happens is perfection. An incredible mix of brilliant rides, great food, amazing beers and some rather weird things. Los Geht’s!

Just a heads up, this blog is probably going to be in a weird order! I’m joined by Emily from Retro Rollercoasters! I’ve also already written a blog ranking the six 2024 Oktoberfest beers, check that out if you haven’t already. Link to Oktoberfest Beers blog

We arrived in Munich and headed out for food and drinks.

The plan wasn’t to go to the festival that evening, but who could resist?

Had my annual ride on Looping! It rides fine until a couple of loops in, where it begins to compress your spine. After that we deserved one of these:

The festival was drawing to a close for the evening, so we had a late night walk through Munich.

I always seem to wake up early when staying in a hotel, so an early walk around Munich was the obvious thing to do!

But after a long walk, it’s important to hydrate!

But it’s also important to not drink too much delicious beer at once! Spacing the drinking out by riding stuff is the obvious answer!

Circus Circus is one of my favourites! It’s fun yet comfortable level of spinning! A must ride if you visit the Wiesn!

One of my other all time favourites is Mondlift!

Mondlift is just brilliant! It runs a proper cycle, unlike most other rides of this type and actually makes you feel like you’re flying through space! Emily tried to convince the Mondlift team to run it backwards for us, sadly that wasn’t successful.

Mondlift selfie!

This year I decided that I wanted to try out one of the giant swings:
I would say that these look a lot more impressive than they actually are. It was ok, but don’t think I’d bother again!

Our second day was nearly coming to an end, so we headed for a beer!

The next day we arrived early and ventured into one of the few tents which don’t serve beer!

Tasty coffee and cake! There was even music!

We decided to head into Oldie Wiesn, an area which celebrates the history of the festival. It’s home to a few beer tents and some classic rides.

Who doesn’t love a classic ride?!

There’s also a small museum, which is worth a look.

The museum isn’t just home to giant apes, there’s also things like this:

These are the mallets used by Munich Mayors to tap the first beer of the festival each year! There’s even bets on how many hits the mayor will need to tap the beer!

Now, the ride line up at the festival is fairly consistent each year. There was a new for this year flat ride, I decided to check it out!

It was fairly gross! Lots of spinning, but not good spinning. I don’t really know how to explain what good spinning is, I guess see Break Dances. More on those later.

As it was starting to get dark, we decided to take a ride on the classic wheel.

The views are best seen at night!

Really shows the sheer scale of the tents doesn’t it?

It then time for food and we headed to an old favourite, the cheese tent!
Roast pork with cheesy potato dumplings and a wheat beer. Incredible.

We decided to do something gentle, to give our food time to go down.

Who doesn’t love a big, spinning disc which throws drunk people off in every direction?!

Our next adventure of the night involved one of the most famous attractions at the Wiesn. The Toboggan is a fast moving belt, which takes you up to a slide! It’s a great watch and actually very difficult to do without falling over, as I found out.

There’s a lot of debate over which is the best coaster at Oktoberfest, for me it’s Alpina Bahn:
Smooth, fast and fun!

That brings us to our last day. We had a relaxed time before our flight that evening.
We of course started with a coffee!
Then headed for a Schnitzel lunch in Heinz Wurst, a new tent to us!

The Schnitzel featured potatoes in a cucumber sauce. I’m not a fan of cucumber, but it was actually alright!
A beer of course

This was a nice tent, very relaxed!

If you’ve made it this far, thank you! It’s time we talk about Break Dances! I think Break Dances are the best flat rides. I’ve never ridden something as fun and that brings me as much joy!

If I see a Break Dance, I have to ride! We had at least one ride on one per day! One of our rides was even controlled by a legendary Break Dance operator! We always finish our time at Oktoberfest with a Break Dance, just after we have had our last beer:

Thanks so much for reading!

Smile Like You Mean It: The Story of My Friendship With Rach, Mental Health and Our Latest Adventure.

I’m very fortunate to have great friends in my life, I don’t think you can put a value on good people. People who have your back, make you laugh, pick you up if you need it, advise you, complement you and at times challenge you. I’m not a great lover of texting or messaging, because it just isn’t the same as being together in real life. To me, a sign of a great friend is someone you can spend weeks or months away from, but when you do meet again, it’s like you were never apart. People come and go, the best people stay.  In 2011, whilst at secondary school, I was elected to Sports Council. At this time I was failing to accept that my rugby playing days were nearly over. I have a lifelong problem with my back, it was getting worse. I was seeing two physios a week, hours of laying on my front having my back looked at, coupled with loading up on whatever pain relief the Dr would prescribe me. That was all to try and get through the rugby matches. Eventually, my consultant, Dr Jenner, told

A RADical Improvement To The Cambridge Beer Scene: The Rad Preview Night!

It’s so good to see Cambridge’s smallest pub back open! I was invited to the preview night and had a great time. For most of my drinking life, this pub was fairly rubbish. The beer, although cheap, was terrible. Most of it came from a brewery, which no longer exists. I don’t miss it. Enough about rubbish beer though, what’s the new Rad like?  Well, in my opinion, it’s just what Cambridge needed. The beer scene in Cambridge is sadly dominated by Greene King, there are too few places where you can get both a good range of beer and beer served in good condition. The Rad had one of the best ranges of beer, I’ve seen in ages. There was literally something for everyone. From sours, to various types of IPA, impy stouts, lager and bitter! There were some preview night teething issues with the beer screens, but it’s so good to be able to see the beer list, style of beer and strength so clearly! The condition was excellent, as expected.  I sampled beers from Marble, Two Flints and Anspach &

Moose On The Loose: Manchester - February 2024: This Is The One

Manchester is probably the most diverse beer city in The UK. It’s got traditional pubs, taprooms and trendy ‘craft’ places, the vast majority of places I’ve been in Manchester have been excellent! This is the story of my second pub trip to Manchester and I’m joined by legend of blog, Rach!  The trip started with a massive error, and it’s not having a night out before an away day, because that is always a good idea. It is using trains. I should have driven, still I got do my first delay and repay. Anyway, on to the beer!  We started at Hops & Boogie, as we needed to do some shopping in Sale.  The Squawk Porter went done a treat!  We then hopped on the tram and headed towards a strong contender for best taproom in The UK, Track.  Rainbow beer board! My least fave type of glass Track’s taproom is spacious, light and has good seating options. Oh and great beer! What more could you want?  Living my best life. We then headed to another taproom, Sureshot.  I thought Northerners were imm
